This wildass #glamrock-era cover by Alex (like the one by #ScottWalker) was based on the version-in-translation heard in the successful 1968 musical, Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris. But the #JacquesBrel-penned original, entitled "Au Suivant", dates all the way back to 1964. It remains one of the more shocking - and still probably NSFW - songs ever to get wide radio airplay in France.

@emma@assemblag.es I really want to believe the Fediverse is a place to promote independent business and artistic endeavours, but everything I see/read here tells me it’s ABSOLUTELY NOT. Perhaps I’m wrong - but the why is complex and a topic for another discussion.
But assuming this is true, you’re left with . . . mainstream social media channels. Which as most of us know aren’t social in any sane way. They are stacked decks against the little person at the very best of times.
A loved one uses IG and TikTok regularly to promote her writing career, she views it as the only way to get the message out to those who might want to engage with her work. She’s found very modest results that way, and in that sense it’s been positive. But it’s all balanced against the toll that ugly/stupid place takes on your mental health/psyche every goddamn day. Which is real.

@Wintergr33n@lingo.lol I started going to record shops regularly in 1981. I don't ever remember seeing them for sale in these shops . . . though they might've just been kept behind the counter? But I do have memories of seeing 8-track tapes for sale at truckstops & highway rest stops when on long drives across the American SW with my parents. Country & western music is disproportionately represented on 8-track, a lot of which was no doubt aimed at truck drivers.

This home taped #OtisRedding & #JimiHendrixExperience #8TrackCartridge eBay-find initially had me stumped. Where oh where had I seen those long legs on the original tape label peeking out from underneath at the bottom? Then I flashed on it: it's the Fool On The Hill album by #SergioMendesAndBrasil66, that easy-listening warhorse of conservative household music collections all across the US in the early 70s.
Finally, Sergio M. is going to good use.
(Also note: this taper went and split both "Satisfaction" and "Like a Rolling Stone" across programs - proof he/she was a truly sensible 8-track listener)

#Honk - "Circles In Sand" (20th Century Records, 1973)
My favourite Orange County, CA band of all time. They beat any punker band you wanna point to with a beautifully jazz inflected, hippie-as-surf sound. Singer/songwriter #RichardStekol was the nominal leader, but across 3 great albums they showed that every member could write, sing, and play their ass off - including singer #BethFitchetWood, who still performs these songs around Laguna Beach today.
#KendraFoster - "Promise To Stay Here" (2016)
Best known for her wonderful work not only with a latter-day #GeorgeClinton and his #PFunkAllStars but also the angelic #DAngelo and #TheVanguard, Kendra Foster was also totally comfortable doing it by herself. This track of hers haunted my playlists from a decade ago and still gets me hitting repeat before I can let it fade away entirely.

#SIN34 were an early 80s West LA hardcore band notable for ushering drummer/filmmaker #DaveMarkey (Desperate Teenage Lovedolls, The Year Punk Broke, etc.) on to the scene. But they were also one of the few to have a female singer (#JulieLanfeld), and a rad one at that. She had guts, a sense of humour, and one of those deep SoCal drawls that covered up for the fact she couldn’t actually sing. But then, what self-respecting HC singer could?
(On a personal note, I used to date someone who was routinely mistaken for Julie around the South Bay. Naturally, we both took this as a totally righteous compliment.)
