0030, my wife: “It’s been two weeks now, why aren’t you getting better? You should see a doctor.”

1058, GP’s nurse: “Yeah, it sounds like you need to come in for an appointment.”

1355, GP: “I’m sending you to hospital for a chest x-ray and blood tests.”

1440, radiographer: “Never mind the blood tests, you should go to the emergency department now.”

1825, ED doctor: “You have double pneumonia. We’re going to keep you here overnight.”

Well that escalated quickly.

“Dad you said there was going to be a funny part! You lied to me!”

I guess the 5yo is not yet old enough to appreciate the Muppet Show.

Replying to
@upol Radar charts are appropriate where the independent variable is cyclical — days of the week, months of the year, compass direction. They’re tempting but misleading for series that aren’t cyclical, because the series can be in any order, but different orders produce very different areas, making the area meaningless. If you’re measuring things that have different scales, that strongly suggests they aren’t cyclical, so a set of four bar charts would be more accurate.

@marioguzman@mastodon.social @mwichary@mastodon.online If you need to custom-replicate it anyway, you could dial up the duration and/or distance, or dial down the damping. Like you’re sitting on a seesaw and someone just jumped on the other end.

@marioguzman@mastodon.social @mwichary@mastodon.online A more appropriate animation could be for the window to briefly bounce towards the user (bigger and with deeper shadow) and back again.

More appropriate because this animation is already used for a very similar situation: if you use the Open File dialog to open a document that’s already open. Try it in TextEdit, Pages, Numbers, Acorn, Bike, OmniGraffle, etc.

@ak@mastodon.social Have you considered just using an ellipsis? That’s always applied to buttons as well as menu items. Some people don’t notice it, but I predict it would work for more people than anything else. Even for icon-only buttons, if you can make room for a chevron to show which ones open a menu, you can make room for an ellipsis to show which ones open a dialog.

(Oddly, the old Mac Human Interface Guidelines — e.g. p 70 and p 207 in the 1992 edition — said “Do not include the ellipsis character if the dialog box appears only to ask users to confirm their actions”. I think that was a mistake: If you have a shutdown confirmation dialog and you add a checkbox “Reopen windows when logging back in”, does it suddenly stop being a confirmation dialog? What if there were two checkboxes? Or three? Etc.)
