Disappointed with Rust (community) kind of It’s claimed as a memory-safe language, and that’s true for “safe” code. However, our software and machines require unsafe code to function. Yet currently, according to the rust foundation (2024), it appears that 34% of crates use unsafe code directly or indirectly (yes, that’s a lot). https://rustfoundation.org/media/unsafe-rust-in-the-wild-notes-on-the-current-state-of-unsafe-rust/ The thing is every single call to poorly managed unsafe code can “contaminate” the rest of the code. Today, when we talk about a cryptography library, anyone would find it very risky to trust a library that hasn’t been audited (and that’s a good things). But for the rest of the code, this requirement is practically nonexistent. Claiming to write safe code is all well and good, but the tools (particularly audit and formal verification tools) need to be up to the task and become the norm, which is absolutely not the case.
