I find it odd that philosophers like Curtis Yarvin (dumb) and René Girard (boring) are having a moment, but Guy Debord, whose "Society of the Spectacle" is more relevant than ever is almost unheard of.

@mattblaze@federate.social when I lived Florida, I would often drive by a house with a bomb shelter in the front lawn. I don't know if it's still there, but I get chills thinking that we were so close to nuclear war that a lot of people thought home bomb shelters were a good idea.

@BenCotterill @sinituulia also, ironic that there are 30 million are Americans (my estimate) who would be exstatic to move to Seattle. There are thousands moving there to be homeless!
This guy is like, "nope".

@evacide to clarify, I think they have a list of stuff they already want to cut, but if they sent that out, people would complain and lobby. By saying they are doing an audit and then announcing these cuts, one by one as "secret deep state waste", any opposition is defused.
I think they learned this with #covid19 denialism. The depressing part is, I don't think anyone has an andidote.

Mind you, this doesn't consider discouraged voters not turning out. I get it. In 2004, my district voted 79% for the Republican. It's hard to care in those cases.

@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io the reaction would be the same if Arsenio Hall still had his late night show. I think you ate comparing apples to oranges.

@violetmadder@kolektiva.social @mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io I shouldn't spend more energy on this, but I found a ranking of late night hosts based on public polling. I was shocked that Arsenio is 19th! I guess I'm getting old, as he would be 3rd for me.
A better example to make my point (although I can't quite remember what my point was) would have been Trevor Noah. I think that would have made the biggest impact as he's 4th on this list and was at the biggest liberal late night institution.

@violetmadder@kolektiva.social @mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io I think an edgier comic would have more devoted fans. Think of all the Stern fans who carried out his pranks (I don't know if he still encourages pranks).
There could be a difference in editorial writers feeling more concerned for Kimmel. I don't know how those people make the calls they make!

@QasimRashid@mastodon.social she also said, "you people are next.", which is threatening. The $100k is her bail, not a fine. I would imagine this is plea bargained away and ends in a fine and community service.
With the other case, ironically, if you are heavily armed enough, the police tend to stay away to avoid violence, such as occurred at Ruby Ridge and Waco. If nuts seem to be keeping to themselves, is rather avoid a confrontation too.
