@codinghorror I don’t disagree, but doesn’t this apply pretty equally to at least “Open”AI, too? Constant lying and inconsistency seems to apply without a doubt personally to Sam and his orbit, and I’d throw the company in that bucket, too, even if only because it seems so shaped in his image. (I’d agree that Google and the other biggest direct competitors do not seem nearly as far down that road, at least in my perception.)

@mjg59@nondeterministic.computer Yes, thank you. In addition to attracting and retaining talent generally, it also serves as a healthy deterrent against coercion…

@marcoarment@mastodon.social Thankfully, I suppose, it at least matches the much longer history of Apt syntax behavior on Debian/Ubuntu servers, where you have to update the repo lists before being able to upgrade any outdated packages.
(And then I also make it easier by aliasing brew update ; brew upgrade ; brew cleanup as one run every few days.)

@siracusa@mastodon.social @bartreardon@aus.social As someone who years ago had to periodically compile newer Perl and Perl modules on HP-UX (Itanium) for $WORK, can confirm… significant differences in performance, features, platform support, etc. over time encompassed in that one major version 5.

@oscherler@tooting.ch @marcoarment@mastodon.social Correct, should’ve written that clearer. I’ve always found that slightly counterintuitive vs. the yum/dnf upgrade syntax on RHEL-based systems… with apt you have to do apt install [package], which will then upgrade only the specified package and its dependencies if it’s already installed. 🤷♂️
