Lorena Abad Crespo Award for Innovation in Spatial Data Science.

A year ago, we lost a friend. Today, we'd like to celebrate her life and what she stood for. This award honours Lorena’s life, spirit, and contributions by recognising people who push open spatial data science forward.

Be part of the celebration and remember Lorena with us. Nominations are open until 31 May 2026. Self-nominations and nominations of others are welcome.

Details and nomination form: https://spatial-data-science.github.io/award.html

Though papers are boring, so we have something fun for you - a map. If you head to https://urbantaxonomy.org there's a beautiful interactive map of the resulting taxonomy waiting for you. Just a piece of warning - it can suck a lot of time! 3/n
Urban Taxonomy using Hierarchical Morphotope Classification
Urban Taxonomy

Urban Taxonomy using Hierarchical Morphotope Classification

A classification of built-up fabric. It divides cities into regions of consistent patterns of urban form and connects them via a taxonomic tree.

At the same time, the “data-driven" nature of quantitative methods tends to be disjoint from morphological theory. We took concepts known from 80s and re-conceptualised them for urban morphometrics. This leads to identification of "morphotopes" (as biotopes), the smallest morphologically homogeneous regions. And because there's a lot of them, we have organised them into a taxonomy. 2/n

One aspect I am really proud of is hidden in the Data availability statement - “The SA3 functionality has been contributed to the open source package spopt, morphometric assessment to momepy, and features required to support those to libpysal, shapely and geopandas.” We have not only published our research code openly but made sure the relevant pieces have been contributed upstream. So big thanks not only to co-authors but to a wider community! 4/4

Our online course on Spatial Data Science in Python has opened registrations once again. This time, we're teaching during May 2026.

10 lessons during May, covering everything from introduction to spatial data to #geoAI using Python open-source stack, part of which I've been actively developing for quite a while. Spatial graphs, autocorrelation, interpolation, point patterns, regression and spatial ML, all covered!

See the details at https://martinfleischmann.net/sds/micro/

@openstreetmap I did let them know via the app, under an assumption that it is an honest mistake.

@moritz_negwer I think the general concept is pretty generic so it might work. It is also the reason why the underlying regionalisation algorithm SA3 was contributed to spopt package, to facilitate other use cases like yours. How would it work in practice I have no idea though :D

@underdarkGIS out of curiosity, how do you distinguish between geospatial and spatial data science ? 🧐
