it's she who doesn't get federation. nodes are like mirrors facing each other, so each of those 15M accounts scattered over thousands of instances can each be perceived as a local id that can each issue a boost that gets mirrored infinitely. 10G is peanuts compared with infinity :-P

I see an implied question in your post: why do people prefer what's most popular? the most popular answer to this question is: most people use this heuristics, so I do too :-)

without source code there's no chance whatsoever of software freedom. why invent yet another schism? why do you wish to divide our movement over false accusations?

I post this from a 16-year-old computer I can still buy 32-bit machines today. if they are buggy and also last 16 years... they'd better be fixable

yeah. how about the GPS in your brand new car? or the shop-list management component in your fridge, or the TV show recorder, or the internet firewall with time-based rules? are those on sale today ready to work 16 years from now? surely they won't be covered by warranty by then, so if customers are going to be stopped from having the software fixed by third parties, that's planned obsolescence with a new twist to escape liability

i was not about you specifically, sir anyway, it looks like you're saying there's no problem whatsoever, that all products for sale and in shelves today will be either fine 16 years from now, or it will be ok for them to turn into landfillers, even if mindless greed didn't lead their makers to deprive users of the possibility of fixing this sort of problem. do I get you right?

I'd rather not buy any computing equipment (regardless of price) whose software only the vendor is allowed to audit or fix. I'm old enough to remember how much work went into checking and fixing stuff so that Y2K was a whimper rather than a boom. yeah, fixable software can be patched and problems can be avoided. it's proprietary software that only suppliers can fix that has me worried, because they're more likely to leave old stuff unmaintained, unfixed and unfixable to make you buy their newer products

I'm of two minds on this matter on the one hand (mind? :-) I find consent quite important on the other, I find there's often plenty of room for implied and assumed consent in normal life, though different societies and cultures have different "normal" assumptions. sometimes objections to behaviors based on implied consent and expansive notions of freedom come to me like "yes, your honor, I did shout fire in a crowded theater, and there was no fire, but see, that was just a prank on my best friend, I did not give my consent for anyone else to hear, let alone react to it!"
