I host my own email, DNS, website, and many other services, so I figure I should probably host my own mastodon instance as well. Plus as @aral@mastodon.ar.al always says, it's good for the Fediverse to have more smaller instances.

So I'm going to attempt the Mastodon server migration now, which means if you follow me, it *should* automatically move you. If not, you can follow me @kyle@mastodon.kylerank.in.

Today is my last day at Purism after being there for over five years. I'm marking the event on my Tempus Nectit knitting machine clock with a white stripe.

Did Turing realize his standards for computer intelligence made incentives to develop AI that are judged first on how well they deceive?

Whether it's lying about being human, lying about the quality/correctness of your work, or creating false images/audio/video presented as real, many (most?) current applications for "AI" and their metrics for success, seem to be founded on intentional deception.

It seems risky & unethical to create intelligence where lying is the first lesson.

Wrote for Linux Journal and it was a gas
Every month, published Hack and /
Wrote for a decade only to find
LJ went bust, posts gone behind

Wrote for Linux Journal and it was divine
I wrote down everything on my mind
A lot of great tips that now you can't find
LJ went bust, posts gone behind

In between, I put the best columns in a book of mine
It is now self-published with hardcover spine
Paperback and ebook too, they all are good
I sell them on Lulu

@martijnbraam I appreciate your posting a follow-up and analysis of this post. I skimmed (and even boosted) that article this morning because I was curious about the claims and what would come of it after more eyeballs were on it.

You wouldn't get this from any other guy

I just wanna tell you what I've written
Gotta make you understand

It's the Best of Hack and /
It's a Linux admin class
You can order and real fast send to you
Hardback's awesome I won't lie
Paperback is a close tie
With the ebook you can buy on Lulu

@cavaughan@mastodon.arch-linux.cz I have a pinwheel calculator just like that! But not a Russian model, it is a Brunswiga.

@zwarf In general it's good practice to backup your GPG keys in offline storage so you can restore them, but even in the case you didn't, after 90 seconds this falls back to your regular disk unlock passphrase. That way you can select a much stronger passphrase that would otherwise be inconvenient to type each time you boot.

@goatwildernesscollective It should be possible but someone would have to write GPG integration to unlock that keyring. Once that is there the smart card should "just work".

@cavaughan I have a Comptometer manual that goes into how to do more advanced things like roots, but it seemed complicated enough that I'd never know if I got the right answer.

I plan to merge these mobile changes back to the original repo (https://source.puri.sm/pureos/packages/smartcard-key-luks) once it gets a bit more testing so the same script can work on desktop and mobile.

@giglioli For the super-near-term I'm going to finish writing a new book I started after my Best of Hack and / book, about how to write a tech book (it's so meta, I know). Beyond that, I don't know. Open to suggestions and opportunities.
