Aging in computer science is hard, in that the current thing changes so often, so the current thing is like my second (or maybe sixth?) language , if that analogy makes sense. Still, sometimes I know the answers to the questions people in my lab have because I've been doing this for quite a while and have tried lots of things and learned from lots of mistakes. It makes me feel so useful!

A thing that can be difficult as a computer scientist at a biology institute is that all things involving computers are assumed to be the same. I'm reviewing applications for something, and I've been assigned a bunch of genetics applications to review, because there is the word computer somewhere in there... My biology knowledge is incredibly narrow, just what I need to collaborate. I feel totally unqualified to review these applications...

Replying to
@steveroyle@biologists.social thanks, i've downloaded zotero at least once and never gotten into it. i've been writing exclusively on overleaf, and i see that there is an overleaf to zotero connection, so maybe that is how i should do it. i kind of like the simplicity of just copy-pasting into a file, but maybe that is just me being set in the old ways :).

OK, late to the game, but discovered that chatbots can be used instead of emacs macros

What is your go-to way of getting bibtex citations for a paper? I have been using Google Scholar, but what it returns is kind of a mess, e.g. an arXiv preprint is cited as an \@article in
journal={arXiv preprint arXiv:2007.12298}
instead of how arXiv says to cite things, as a \@misc with
eprint={2007.12298},
archivePrefix={arXiv},
primaryClass={cs.LG},
surely this has been solved by now? I really like the Google Scholar browser extension interface
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/google-scholar-button/

Download Google Scholar Button for Firefox. Lookup scholarly articles as you browse the web.

Replying to
@oritpeleg Orit's work is SO cool. As a computer scientist studying biology, it's one of the best examples I know of convergence of animal behavior and information theory.
