#lifeofPI I am going through my first cycle as a PI: does anyone else experience this feeling proud of their supervisee as they started to becoming equal and also feel a bit sad that they are leaving?

@neuralreckoning @nadege Now before I take my non-alcoholic beer (btw HepCAF from Gipsy hill is awesome for those have not tried) and shut up, I feel what @steveroyle was saying maybe that these are important things we need to discuss but perhaps not inside academic circle but as a member of society, we need a change culture as whole, a political one even.

@mbaudis@genomic.social I would agree, but also slightly pushing back on our modern (post-1990) assumption: is it really normal to go across a continent in 1-2 hours and only cost under 100 Euro? while majority of other species travel the same distance over months? I split my train journey to Germany from London to Luebeck into two days last summer, and yes it is more expensive and longer but it the cheap flight journey really cost us less? or it just cost us differently? @marcrr@ecoevo.social

@j_bertolotti but it has changed in UK, the living cost is high and for the students mentioned in the Guardian it would become clear, the y needs to think carefully ton balance cost of living and the assumed language advantage, China and European countries on balance can be a better options. 2/2

@albertcardona I completely agree, hence the draw to the UK was an image that was sold to and re-enforced ourselves but after some careful examination, it is a lot of wishful thinking and not entirely true. However I am not sure how much everyday life I can operate well in a country that I don't speak the language @j_bertolotti

@j_bertolotti @albertcardona it's the language and the interconnected network one imagined for the Anglosphere. I was a subscriber for it myself as an international student, plus the UK was among the few countries that had shorter years to complete Master(1yr) and Bachelor degrees (3yr), although this list is now expanded.

Almost all my international MSc students worked and it is so hard for them. At the same time I think the PhD graduate job market is just as tough too. The amount of effort and the length of time they need to find a job that fulfill their dream and survive is unbelievable. Not so sure the old wisdom of my student times applies anymore.

Your example actually reminds me of this historical case of a false witness of deer as horse and the person did this on purpose so I think it is closer to the case of this paper.

And I do agree with you that having debate about zebra and horse has it's place but inserting deer as horse is malpractice and should not be rewarded just in the name of transparency

I know nothing about place cells (really nothing). But I do feel all three of you have point, and it reminds me of the debates of M/E cells in #drosophila circadian rhythm. They are useful for most of time, but sometimes it doesn't fit the data, it is fine to report these cases and refram the definition. But sometimes you can see someone just wants to make a wide insertion, but sometimes they are right! what mechanism allows us to manage all these?
