Very excited to be rejoining the conference space with this talk! We’re going to be looking at whether accessibility compliance is working, what the issues are and get some inspiration from work in gaming accessibility @webstandards@mastodon.world

Text alternatives, especially for complex images, are not just for blind or visually impaired folks, they are also important for users with cognitive issues and/or are neurodivergent.

Alt text is not always the best medium for this; text alternatives in the body are better for long descriptions. Alt text is not the be all and end all of making images accessible.

Using LLMs for accessibility is a dead end because a) they accelerate climate change and b) put more power in the pockets of Big Tech and venture capitalists and both of these outcomes increase the inequality disabled people globally face.

On an individual level LLMs and other AI services can benefit disabled folks, in the same way access to taxis via Uber does, but like Uber ultimately disabled people will be dropped like a hot rock once the companies running AI have made themselves ubiquitous

Not only are my union handwavy on trans rights, but their only objection to AI taking over where I work is that not everyone is being trained in it equally 🙄
