Growing up in Seattle, I remember learning about MLK Jr., the civil rights movement, and racism but it was always as history--things that happened in the past. And that's how I thought about bigotry and racism until I was in high school and went to visit step family in Alabama for the 4th of July.
We all went to a water park and were having a good time until one of the AL bunch declared he would not go in the wave pool because there were black people in it. Only he used the N word. I was flabbergasted. I remember bobbing up and down in the waves with everyone else trying to wrap my head around what he had said, and I just couldn't. It made no sense to me.
I still think about that trip to the water park every 4th of July. Every year, I wonder if there's more or less people in this country like Kenny and how such hatred and bigotry continue to exist.

Cursing, complaining, angry rant
I want to say a gigantic FUCK YOU to my old landlords. Kiddo was having some big feelings are was teary eyed when we were leaving the house so I scooped him and the toddler up and took them for a drive while my wife did the walk through. Today she told me some of the stuff they said.
Things like "I've been around a lot of kids, he'll get over it. They always do." And "it's good for kids to go through hard things".
Even if you're right, you are not their parent-- what makes you think your opinion about my child's feelings is wanted or relevant? Saying it's good for kids to go through hard things is the most condescending, out of touch boomer bullshit I've heard since I was in grade school in the 90s. He's moving out of the only house he's ever lived in-- being sad is to be expected. Minimizing those feelings to they'll be gotten over, and it's good for them is disrespectful and shows a frightening lack of empathy. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with you anymore. Good luck selling your house for 700k in a neighborhood where nothing has gone for over 640k, you absolute Muppets.
