@lapis@elekk.xyz Like the tl;dr is If you want people to have some skepticism and double-check info Give them the tools/examples of what's doing it right as well as what's doing it wrong, and don't just rely on your own authority as the reason for a reader to trust you. Cause then you're just kind of undermining the point

@lapis@elekk.xyz Blind Spots by Marty Makary It's theoretically a book about times medicine as an institution got stuff wrong, and like. As far as I got none of the refutations or counter info he presents strikes me as wrong. But there's a lot of name-dropping (not just "Dr Whoever at University", but "my colleague Dr Whoever....") which feels odd. And he spends one chapter talking about how there was like a. Percent error or statistical significance calculation that was wrong in something a lot of the medical organizations just accepted. But he doesn't give us the calculations in the countering studies, so we have no presentation of why we should trust those over the first one besides his word. Then there's a chapter about how there's been a LOT of general changes since the 1950s, focused on how diet or antibiotic use has caused changes in our intestinal microbiomes and that causing a cascading effect.... but he mentions how diagnostic ratios for different stuff has changed, without making mention of diagnostic criteria or equipment being better...? I feel like that would be a significant part to at least footnote about. (Like, as an example not relevant here, "more kids have ADHD now!" is really more "we can diagnose ADHD more clearly now") Plus just some wording stuff that was making me feel weird for no real reason.

Like ever since I learned that no, I'm just imagining stuff feeling emptier as you play, characters actively change schedules to not hang out with their friends aa you befriend them, it just... feels gross??? I don't want characters getting lonelier!!!!! Then the whole islands subplot leaves a bad taste And just. A lot of the characters are assholes!!! With no way to confront them!!!!! Or encourage better behavior!!! Lewis will never give Marnie recognition in the way she wants, you can't encourage Pam to maybe join Shane in working on the alcoholism, there's no way to get Demetrius and Sebastian hanging out by way of research science and mechanics having common ground, you can't get Pierre to examine his sexism. Like I am so taken with the potential of the setting but even with stuff like expansion mods so much of it just falls flat and really what I want is Stardew's level of starting variety and pacing in a Story of Seasons-vibe of a setting where there's more hope. Mistria is close but the devs have some favoritism towards certain characters that bugs me, on top of being a little too frictionless to scratch the itch that Stardew can start to handle for me.

Emma is a middle schooler who is written kind of as a stereotypical busybody feminist type. Her mom is a hairdresser. Emma's mom is about to get married, and so Emma decides to try a perm (on her own...?) and it comes out terribly. This episode aired in 2003. Legally Blonde came out in 2001. There is NO way that, even if Emma's mom wouldn't have ideas for how to relax the perm (or is too busy with her own prep to help), Emma wouldn't have jumped to "maybe I can try to wash it out!" on her own based on the climax of that movie. Like there's no way Girl Power, Raised By Single Mom, Misinformed Social Justice Warrior Emma would not have gone to see it and been strongly affected by the movie. Heck that could have been an escalation on its own, if the curls relax at different rates or something. Instead Emma's just freaking out about the perm in and of itself for like half of her screentime and not doing anything about it and. It just bugs me!!!!!!!

Since I'll have summer work, gonna finally try to get a classroom library built up

Which means asking fellow staff "hey what's the cover our ass guideline for content"

Cause I was a VORACIOUS reader, and it's middle school so we're on the cusp of YA and Juvenile books, so any ideas I have about what's personally appropriate is gonna be different from what's officially appropriate

(To use a lower grade comparison: Animorphs is for like 1st or 2nd graders! But it also HEAVILY deals with PTSD and military culpability, which are very heavy subjects and I can think of a few situations in them where a parent might be "hey what the fuck" and make it an issue)

Except there is no way to be soulless and do what they're doing with every single frame of Witch Hat Atelier. Ep 5 had me crying not from emotions, but from the sheer artistry and care
(Though emotions too, in 2 scenes)

I hate math so much sometimes

This assignment for my students gives the Fahrenheit and Celsius conversions as:
F = ((9/5) C) + 32
C = (5/9) (F - 32)

I'm sure there's An Actual Reason that i'm too silly to intuit but I'm so baffled that one is multiply than add, and the other is subtract then multiply. Like. What!!! What. Why are they not the same order.
