Recall when offprints were a symbol of academic honour? Explore the nostalgia of sharing research before the digital age. 🌐📚 #Throbbackposthttps://www.kai-arzheimer.com/in-a-land-before-time-offprints/

Even in the last millennium, peer reviewed publishing was rubbish. But hey, we could show off with private print runs. True (and pathetic) story.

In 2024, German political science got very excited when #BSW seemed able to tap into that fable left-wing authoritarian potential. Two years down the line, their polling is flatlining, and they are asking the #AfD to hold joint campaign events. Are they (gasps) just plain authoritarian after all? https://taz.de/BSW-Brief-an-die-AfD/!6192077/

E.g. the lower-right panel shows the role of nativism for the AfD vote: support for the party is almost nonexistent amongst voters with liberal or even centrist positions, while the majority of those with very nativist positions vote for the #AfD. The rest is left as an exercise for the reader. But…

This reflects unmodelled structural differences, such as regional political cultures & identities, but also organisational strength and social embeddedness of parties. Meanwhile in #Germany: intelligence service designates the Saxony-Anhalt chapter of the far-right #AfD as an extremist ('gesichert rechtsextrem') organisation, which warrants covert observation of functionaries and all that. The party is likely to challenge that in the courts

This looks very interesting and confirms the intuitions of anyone who has ever heard about agenda setting and the effects of elite rhetoric. Will not prevent mainstream politicians from being stupid. Extra points (from a certain demographic) for the title.

More specifically, aggregate volatility (the lower bound for individual changes in voting behaviour) in the eastern/western macro regions was higher than at any point in German post-war history, which pushed the two results further apart than they've ever been since 1990. But ackchyually ....

... the two macro regions are not internally homogeneous. Each square on this map represents a constituency. Squares are shaded according to how much the local result differs from the national average. The former GDR stands out, but so do large parts of Bavaria and various urban centres.

Regression confirms this intuition: very densely populated constituencies are very unusual, but so are very rural ones. In sum, it makes most sense to distinguish between 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘳 groups of territories with distinct profiles: the city states, the former GDR outside Berlin, Bavaria, and all the rest.

Do these differences stem from (self-)sorting and regional polarisation? Partly. Once I control for individual socio-demographics and attitudes, urbanisation becomes irrelevant. The effects of ideology are very strong & would warrant a separate paper.

... region is still an important factor in the micro model. This figure shows how it affects each party’s fortunes (controlling for ideology and socio-demographics), compared to the old west. See e.g. that the Christian Democrats are doing much worse in the city states & the old East (but Bavaria!)
