Introduction I guess. I'm Julia! I'm a sophomore theatre major / holocaust studies minor in the northeastern US.

I love fairytales, history (European / 17th-20th century most), musical theatre, dramaturgy, and classic literature.

I'm a bit of a nerd & excited to interact with everyone!

for those following, guess I'm just gonna be dumping my rough drafting of this piece on write.as so here's the next little bitty piece of it. it's super rough, just sort of throwing stuff at the page to be cleaned up later but might as well put it somewhere I guess.

@orionkidder@writing.exchange It really depends on the playwright! In general, you give an idea of staging ideas but let the director and designers do their jobs in interpreting the best way to present your work in a way that fits your script and their theatre/company/means/etc... Some playwrights specify in great detail how they view the stage while others leave it totally up to designers.

@orionkidder@writing.exchange The play I'm working on right now is actually a history play so I'm working more with the interaction of past and present, but you'd be surprised what theatre can do! Honestly, most of the time I leave that stuff up to designers and directors. Lighting, scenery, costumes all contribute to that fantasy aspect, but I'm not a designer really. Check out shows like Wicked or different productions of Midsummer Night's Dream - there are so many ways to interpret magic on-stage.

@orionkidder@writing.exchange Yeah it's fascinating because I wrestle with the same thing however I'm also doing this partocualr piece from alternating perspectives which I think gets into relationships and different vantage points on the same thing in such an interesting psychological way!

I've never really written anything in the first person before so this feels hella weird but kinda interesting how different characterization / plot development take shape in first versus third person.

@orionkidder@writing.exchange I like fairytale-inspired stuff and historical fiction for general story-writing. Specifically, though, I like writing plays. I'm a theatre student so stands to reason I guess, haha.

@jules@wandering.shop https://write.as/juliamae/ - I just started it, it's just writing snippets right now but I plan to include stuff I did on my old blog - crafting, social justice, research, book reviews, etc...

Also here's one from a good friend of mine with lots of interesting reviews, thoughts on life/academia, travel, etc: https://write.as/veronica/

@InvaderXan@writing.exchange 100%! Me too. I'm a big Maguire fan. I've also recently fallen in love with Katherine Arden's series and I'm impatiently waiting for Audrey Coulthurst's sequel to Of Fire and Stars.

They actually already exist to some degree, I believe! Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles series comes to mind... I've not read it but I know it's YA with a focus on retelling fairytales in a dystopian/technological world. But you're 100% speaking my language. I'm in theatre because I think storytelling has always informed our collective knowledge and understanding as humans and can serve the purpose of educating in so many ways!
