I'm getting really sick of #AI culture and hype.
It can be useful as a tool, but the people running the corporations providing the LLMs, like Anthropic and OpenAI, are the real reason it's toxic. And the toxicity is spreading.
They direct people to train models on copyrighted data without compensation and push for more environmentally-damaging data centers. They are the ones giving CEOs excuses to replace people with automated tools.
They are the enemy, not the technology itself.
It's been 7 months since I last posted on the #Mensago website blog. Right now, I just don't have the spoons. At the same time, I just implemented external delivery. Not much longer and the server component of the platform will be feature complete!
The two fuzzy children aren't getting along well. Anyone have some tips on introducing a new cat to a house that already has one?

@maub@23.social I'm sure it will. When businesses that are heavily invested suddenly see a big jump in their AI costs, they'll realize their massive mistake.
TBH, I think AI just demonstrates how many executives treat people with little value instead of their most important resource.

@atax1a@infosec.exchange No. Technology is scientific knowledge applied to a purpose--cryptography, for example, is apolitical on its own. How it's used OTOH is another matter entirely.
I'm very much against the threat of fascism. AI culture isn't it - just corporate greed and corruption.

@ariarhythmic@ohai.social To be clear, I'm passionately against the current AI culture. It's like the blockchain hype of the 2010s cranked far beyond 11. Like any other mathematical construct, it has its uses beyond cryptocurrency.
If I run a non-Large model on my own computer and my own GPU to help me with code completion while I'm programming, how does that harm anyone?
Lately I've been feeling boring because I'm quiet and seeing all the interesting things everyone else is posting. I've got nothing to share because the last 2.5 months I've either been sick, exhausted, stupid busy, or all 3.
With that said, it's just a season, and all of you are *amazing*. I'm glad to have a glimpse into all of your lives. Don't stop being you. You're a joy to others. ♥️
I try to avoid being political in this forum because I don't have solutions, but this is an exception. You can disagree with James Talarico, but his focus on social justice based on the Bible is refreshing. MAGA is running scared of this guy, and they *should* be. #USPol

Something just hit me: I don't know which I would consider worse: the socioeconomic effects of #AI being a bubble and bursting or things continuing in the direction they are.
On a related note, I don't play TTRPG games in grimdark settings because I'm living in one, or at least it sure *feels* like one. We just haven't hit the apocalypse yet.

@atax1a@infosec.exchange Are they? Cryptography is just applied math in a very specific way. Neural networks, the underlying technology for machine learning -- what people nowadays incorrectly call 'AI' -- is a massively complex statistical model.
I haven't moved the goalposts, but I think there may be gaps in your understanding the technology itself.
