#ClimateHushing (going quiet because you're afraid the topic is a loser) is the most expensive mistake in climate advocacy.
It's exactly backwards, argues Andreas Karelas in a new op-ed in The Hill.
Quick thread on why, and what to do instead. 🧵
Protection for 30% of the world’s ocean to doesn’t reduce fishing yield. It increases it. MPAs are the highest-return fisheries investment available. And they create permanent coastal livelihoods.

Securing indigenous land rights is still the most cost-effective conservation investment alive. Indigenous-managed lands hold more than 1/3 of Earth’s intact forests and intersect with 37% of all remaining natural lands — while covering just 25% of the surface.
#IndigenousLands
The ecological crisis and the development crisis are the same crisis.
The solution to both is not a compromise between environment and economy, it is a redefinition of what a productive economy means.

Standby power — stuff left plugged in doing nothing — can be up to 10% of your electricity bill. A smart power strip on a schedule costs $25 and pays back in weeks. Wrote up the full hierarchy:

Before you spend $15,000 on a home battery, spend $20 on a Kill A Watt. Most people don’t know which appliances are actually running up their bill. Find out first. Then decide.

Indigenous-managed lands cover 22% of Earth’s surface and protect 80% of remaining biodiversity. The most cost-effective conservation investment alive isn’t a technology. It’s a land rights agreement.

Stop thinking ecological health is a cost to development, and start realizing it as the precondition of development. Not a rhetorical move, a structural one. In the accounting, in the financing, in the institutional design, in the legal frameworks, and in the metrics of progress.
Try these swaps: “environment” → “our health and safety.” “emissions” → “clean air, lower energy bills.” “climate justice” → “who gets left behind.” Same truth. Far better reach. Language is not optional.👇

Most people dramatically underestimate how many others care about climate. When you correct that misperception — “actually, most people in your community support action” — behavior shifts. The silent majority needs a signal.👇

🌊 Take Action Tuesday: clean water for our rivers, beaches, and coasts is under threat right now — on four fronts. You can take all four actions, or just the ones you care about, from one link in a few minutes. ht to my friends Adam & Tania @outdooralliance.bsky.social👇

Studies confirm: sharing what’s WORKING motivates more action than sharing what’s failing. Progress is persuasive. Name the wins. Show who’s doing it. The science calls this “collective efficacy” — and it’s powerful.👇
