Collecting examples of good metaphors from scientists. What is a good, relatively precise metaphor you use or can think of to explain a particular aspect of your research to laypeople?

To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to beware

And by observing change them. To think—to sleep,

The heart-beat and the thousand natural clocks
That flesh is heir to: 'tis a communication

To think, perchance to dream—ay, there's the rub:
For in that sleep of thought what dreams may come

The difference between biology and physics is the difference between dropping a pigeon and a bowling ball from high atop a tower. Biology is the difference between dropping a pigeon and dropping a blue whale (observers watching the experiment from below should however be aware of the physics as regards the whale in particular).
