I thought we all knew this was Apple's business model?

"the complaint alleges that Apple engages in a pattern of behaviors that further entrench consumers into their ecosystem and make it harder to switch, even in the face of high prices and degraded quality"

One of my aims in Holding It Together is to leave readers angry enough that they can't just move on after reading but not so angry they can't fight for change.

Or, as Ai-jen Poo (president of the National Domestic Workers Alliance) put it in her blurb (for which I am deeply grateful!), the "appropriate level of outrage for action."

My 9-year-old is worrying that her loose tooth is going to make it hard to focus during her state assessment test tomorrow. And now I want to run a natural experiment testing the effect of adverse conditions on test scores by comparing test takers with and without loose teeth.

So, what I took away from both Saltburn and Ripley is that, in a hetero-patriarchal society, women can marry their way to upward mobility, but men have to murder and scam their way to the top.

6-year-old: Would everyone vote for me for President if I make every day Earth Day?

Me: Probably not everyone, but you don't need every vote. You can actually win even if you don't get the most.

6: Really?

Me: [explains the electoral college]

6: That makes no sense at all.

Advice like this makes me so angry. It ignores the role institutions and policymakers (and men) could and should be playing to address inequities, devalues care work, normalizes the exploitation of women, and reinforces the illusion that we don't need a real social safety net. 1/

This year's spring break cousin camp includes 8 kids ages 6 weeks to 9 years, 8 parents and grandparents, 1 house for all of us to share for the week, 1 day at Disneyland, and all of the possible caffeine.

I'm curious to know how attacks on higher ed are affecting academic job markets. If they prompt more faculty to try to leave jobs in red states, it might squeeze grad students and postdocs out of the market. Particularly if schools in red states aren't getting replacement lines.

I wish our medical system took women's pain more seriously.

I had an IUD inserted after my second pregnancy. I told the doctor it didn't feel right. He told me discomfort was normal. Two weeks later, the damn thing *fell out* on its own. I called the doctor, and he told me they wouldn't place another one.
