Every news outlet should stand up a Mastondon instance for their reporters & staff.

It’ll be great to see GivennameFamilyname@mastodon.famousnewspaper.com or whatever domain they want to use.

Built in verification. Every reporter for the Washington Post on a washpo domain. Every reporter for the New York Times on an NYTimes domain. Etc, etc.

Plus the “local” feed for each instance becomes a feed of all the posts from that institution mixed together — providing extra discovery.

Did you know that on macOS, you can update just to Safari 26, while remaining on macOS 15 Sequoia or even macOS 14 Sonoma?

Go to  > System Settings > General > Software Update. Under “Also Available” you’ll find Safari listed. Click “Update Now”.

Did you know that this kind of thing happens all the time — Browser 1 is popular. It implements A Cool Feature a certain way. Developers think that's correct, because it's what most users have. Browser 2 follows the web standard & implements according to the agreed-upon spec. But it's different Browser 1. And web developers make their site work in Browser 1. And so it doesn't really work correctly in Browser 2. And developers get frustrated, and blame Browser 2.

But it's Browser 1 that's wrong.

Are you excited for masonry layouts in CSS? Wondering what’s happening?

Well, a third option is emerging. One that unifies the `flex-flow` and `grid-auto-flow` properties into a whole new mechanism — Item Flow.

Learn what it is, and what it means for Flexbox and Grid in https://webkit.org/blog/16587/item-flow-part-1-a-new-unified-concept-for-layout/

UPDATE Jan 2026: When this article was published, the CSS Working Group was considering creating a new mechanism called Item Flow, described at length below.

It’s hard to express just how massive a release Safari 16.4 is for web developers.

Last night, I was reading replies web developers posted on Twitter back in 2021, when I asked what developers need most from WebKit — and the vast majority of things you asked for have now shipped.

What is your favorite feature that just shipped in Safari 16.4?? What will you do with it?

https://webkit.org/blog/13966/webkit-features-in-safari-16-4/

Today, we’re thrilled to tell you about the many additions to WebKit that are included in Safari 16.4.

Web developers and designers,

If you had a chance to instantly learn something about web technology — tech that already shipped, maybe even long time ago — what would you want to learn?

What’s still confusing?
What just doesn’t make sense?
Or what’s something you just haven’t had time to master yet??

Could even be something small — like “why does this one CSS value work like this?!”

I’ve now heard two web developer podcasts state as if it’s fact that only Chrome supports `@scope`.

Nope. Safari shipped support a year ago in Safari 17.4.

https://caniuse.com/css-cascade-scope
If a feature falls in the forest, but everyone just assumes a browser doesn’t have support, does it make a sound?

caniuse.com

Scoped Styles: the @scope rule | Can I use... Support tables for HTML5, CSS3, etc

"Can I use" provides up-to-date browser support tables for support of front-end web technologies on desktop and mobile web browsers.

@alextm@mstdn.ca Safari 26 works on macOS 26 (of course) and two years of macOS before that — so macOS Sequoia and macOS Sonoma. And scroll-driven animations is supported in all three. You can update Safari by itself. Go to  > System Settings > General > Software Update [edit] and find Safari listed under ”Also Available”. (Once it’s out & your computer sees that it’s available.)

@sindarina@ngmx.com @alextm@mstdn.ca ”Safari” will show up in the Also Available section once Safari 26.0 for macOS Sequoia is found by your computer. It can take a while for the news to arrive. I bet it’s listed today. Yes? And yes, how it works changed! It’s no longer behind a “more” link.
