When learning Test-Driven Development (TDD), developers often struggle with identifying boundary conditions and exceptional cases. One resource that has been incredibly helpful to me over the years is the 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐭, created by Elisabeth Hendrickson, James Lyndsay, and Dale Emery. This concise document provides a wealth of inspiration for uncovering edge case scenarios.

Replying to
@tdpauw Indeed. Even a talk about an AI driven can opener would be accepted at tech conferences these days.

Letting the implementation details of the Subject Under Test seep into your test code quickly becomes problematic. It harms readability, forcing readers to decipher the test’s behavior, sometimes even debug it, just to understand what’s happening. Tests should be simple and easy to understand! That’s why it’s crucial to keep the domain knowledge in the production code, and out of your tests.

On Thursday May 7, I'll be hosting my workshop "Testing Done Right" together with the Software Captains Academy. Are you interested to learn more about how to build quality into software, rather than test it in later? Then join me in this workshop. (1/2)

Are your tests slowing you down? Do you want to write tests that actually improve your code’s design and prevent defects?

Join my 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥-𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭-𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 workshop on 𝐌𝐚𝐲 21-22, 2026 at 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐩. This hands-on, two-day experience will transform how you think about testing and software design. You’ll collaborate with peers, work on a real-world codebase, and leave with practical skills to write loosely coupled tests that save you time and headaches. (1/2)

A while back, I was fortunate enough to find a second-hand copy of *Object-Oriented Software Engineering: A Use Case Driven Approach* which was almost as good as new. First published in 1992, the knowledge it contains remains remarkably relevant today. For example, I came across this paragraph:

RE: https://mastodon.social/@chrisoldwood/116413059121230026

End-to-end is further than you think 😄

Mastodon

Chris Oldwood (@chrisoldwood@mastodon.social)

The trouble with the term “end-to-end testing” is that nobody can agree where one end starts and the other end finishes. If you’re not running your tests on the end-user’s machine are you even trying? :P
