How to spot a psychopath: ‘It’s like the difference between a domestic cat and a wild cat’ This article (originally posted here: …piefed.social/…/mefi-how-to-spot-a-psychopath) is intereting because the research behind it is interesting, and as most of you assumed on sight it goes where you think it does, but it actually goes further. I had not heard of or considered this before but it references: The idea of a “pathocracy”, a democracy of normal people taken over by psychopaths, was conceived by an obscure Polish psychologist, Andrew Lobaczewski, who had lived under both the Nazis and then Soviet-era communists. His ideas never landed, because “the psychology publishers thought it was too political, and the political publishers thought it was too psychological,” according to editor and blogger Harrison Koehli. It’s unfashionable to the point of being taboo in psychiatry and psychology now to ascribe personality disorders to public figures. “One of the perils of bringing psychology into politics is that it’s very easy for anyone with any given political perspective to look at their political enemies or rivals and say: ‘OK, well, they’re all psychopaths,’” says Koehli. There’s also the Goldwater Rule, which established as a psychiatric principle that professionals are not allowed to diagnose public figures they haven’t had clinical contact with or met (this was after 1,189 psychiatrists declared Barry Goldwater unfit to be president in the 1964 election). Viding, however, finds the fixation with diagnosis perhaps irrelevant in this context. “I always find the obsession with diagnosing these people interesting. You don’t need to diagnose them, there are a set of personality traits, and you can recognise individuals with those traits. If someone’s in political power, you can see those exemplified in behaviour, and most people are perfectly capable of making an assessment of what that signifies.” It’s like a light going on over “why does it feel like we’re living in crazytown?” It’s not just the one guy. The article is worth a read.

June 2nd primary.

The Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act, which took effect January 1, 2011, created “voter-nominated” offices. The Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act does not apply to candidates running for U.S. President, county central committees, or local offices.

Most of the offices that were previously known as “partisan” are now known as “voter-nominated” offices. Voter-nominated offices are state constitutional offices, state legislative offices, and U.S. congressional offices. The only “partisan offices” now are the offices of U.S. President and county central committee.

But two moderate Democrats — Golden [Maine] and Gluesenkamp Perez [Washington] — defected and helped the procedural vote succeed, putting some of their Democratic colleagues in a politically tricky situation.  House Democratic leadership condemned Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez’s decision later Tuesday. “The decision by two of our colleagues to blindside the entire House Democratic Caucus and join with the Republican majority to pass a procedural rule on the brink of failing represents a significant breach of trust. It is an action that necessitates a serious response, and we have asked the Committee on Caucus Rules to take this up in short order,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a joint statement with House Minority Whip Katherine Clark and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar.

The anti-trans ads work both ways.

Of course they’ll work. All they need to do is add a small lead to their baseline turnout(*) and they’ll win it. Source: watching this tactic work every election for decades.

  • or cut turnout from their opponent. same thing.

A group of 31 Democratic members of the US Congress has sent a letter to the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, criticising the Trump administration over “an apparent effort to interfere with, and potentially undermine” Brazil’s elections. Latin America’s largest country will hold the first round of its presidential election on 4 October, with polls showing a technical tie between the incumbent leftist president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the far-right senator Flávio Bolsonaro. In the letter sent to Rubio on Thursday, 30 members of the House of Representatives and the senator Bernie Sanders listed a series of measures the US government took that they interpret as attempts to secure a victory for Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. They wrote that those actions “reflect a broader and deeply troubling pattern of interference by the Trump administration in recent electoral processes across Latin America”, citing the recent midterm elections in Argentina and presidential elections in Honduras and Colombia. In July, a group of 11 Democratic members of Congress sent a similar letter arguing that Trump was trying to interfere in Colombia’s election in favour of the far-right millionaire and former lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella, who went on to win the second round. In Thursday’s letter, the lawmakers wrote that US officials under Trump have engaged in a “sustained, multifaceted campaign of interference and destabilization in Brazil”. They noted that when Trump imposed his first tariffs on Brazil last year, he made clear that one reason was Bolsonaro’s trial over his attempt to stage a coup after losing the 2022 election to Lula. The former president was ultimately convictedand, unable to run because he is under house arrest, named his son to take his place. Fucking disgusting
