Hello! I'm Florent, a french guy who makes instruments in Estonia, mainly from the flute family. I only use wood from the nearby forest.
I’ve had the account @monviolon@framapiaf.org for years but it was intended for discussing the violin. I’m opening this new account to follow artists and craftspeople and to present my instrument-making activities, which have now officially become professional ones.
Please feel free to share this post to help me out 😉

Anyway, I’m a Frenchman living in the Estonian woods. I make ocarinas, flutes, whistles, and a few more musical stuff using local & natural materials.
You can write me in (from easiest to hardest) French, English, Spanish, Italian and Estonian.

🧵 I don’t make my toy-whistles this way anymore (I now prefer a rectangular window), but I’ll explain a bit this easy version because it’s actually quite fun to do.
If the wood isn’t very dry, I wait for six months after drilling it to allow the diameter to stabilise.
Explanations in images or alt text 🤓
The secret is : when you look through the the duct (from the tip), you should be able to see the edge of the bevel – mostly above it, and only a little below it.

🧵 For another birthday, I thought I’d make a simple wooden toy whistle. I imagined it would be very straightforward. What I made wasn’t complicated, indeed, but it didn’t work very well in the end.
And then I made more for my children. And for other children.
…
And, I don’t know what happened… 🤪 … it just became like a virus. I wanted to improve. I made a small first batch using apple wood to give to friends. For the decoration, I drew inspiration from traditional local embroidery patterns.

🧵 For a friend’s daughter’s birthday, I once had the idea of making a "forest" #xylophone. I’d noticed that, among the trees that grow round here, the #alder sounds surprisingly good. 🤷
I haven’t had time to make another one since, but I’m keeping the idea in mind: It takes a while, but I think anyone can make it easily. It’s very enjoyable:
