Tech-hating techie, extremely hobbyist game dev, cooker of things, baker of other things, learner of making lines on paper look like objects. Committing the great sin of being trans while British

As much as I joke about never really improving at drawing, the thing that I really love about my daily-ish routine is those rare moments of "Oh, THAT'S how that works!"

I've always been really spatially challenged, so there's something really joyful about spotting the probably obvious.

It's all stuff that I've heard before, too. But I find that this is a really challenging domain to integrate didactic learning into (or even just to retain).

It's quite unlike any other domain to me; there's no satisfactory capture of a concept through words or data. I just have to experience it.

Made the horrible mistake of looking into which software I use is beslopped.

Every system component that has given me issues so bad in the past 6 months, up to and including system crashes, that I had to revert and hold their package uses AI-generated code.

Truly a surprise. This never could have been predicted.

Do I have far too many personal projects on the go at the minute? Yes.

Is it likely any one of them will ever be finished under these circumstances? Probably not.

Am I going to do the sensible thing of re-assessing and handling them more sensibly or sequentially? No. I'm going to start another.

What I find most frustrating about visual gAI boosterism is the argument that it somehow "democratises" art

The bar is a marking implement and space to mark. How does an $xb model, costing however much per month to use "democratise" anything?

Frankly, drawing with a stick in the sand qualifies as art. Hell it's not even marking - the arrangement of objects qualifies.

I wanted to put together a 'little' AI statement for my website, basically amounting to "It sucks, I hate it, I don't use it" but detailing the why of that.

Anyway, I've been working on it on-and-off since the beginning of April, am probably only halfway done, at 4204 words, if I'm optimistic.

With my half-remembered C and standard libraries, a game made in a weekend, a website, and some basic JavaScript I'm using for work, I don't feel like I should be poking around in Linux kernel documentation, and yet somehow here I am.

And weirdly? I don't feel so overwhelmed as I was expecting.

I think as much as I have a good sense of what are and are not difficult problems to solve in computing, I have a very poor concept, as a layman, of what is and is not an easy thing to WORK WITH.

Call for information (Boosts appreciated!):

I have semi-recently seen some people suggesting that online job boards have alarmingly low callback rates for applicants, but I cannot track down figures to back up this specific claim directly. I'm seeing recruiting firms (and a whole lot of AI slop) corroborate this, but have yet to find numbers. I would appreciate some sourced hard numbers to confirm or refute this idea.

Any ideas where this might be coming from? Bonus points for a UK focus!

I wasn't originally going to post this on Fedi, since it felt like preaching to the choir, but I've seen no fewer than three "Leave [streaming service]" posts from artists of all stripes over here since so…

Unless you define "ready", and make the target reasonable, you'll never be "ready" to leave Spotify (or music streaming generally, if that's the aim).

These services thrive in expanding your libraries at rates you can't possibly keep up with on a normal income — that's never been doable.

I recently got my hands on a Fairphone, and it must be said that this thing precisely highlights my distaste for design trends in phones.

So much of what makes this "worse" than competitors are exactly the reasons I like it. Being heavier and slightly bulkier are GOOD things - it's easier to hold, and my clumsy arse is less likely to drop the damn thing

And I'll happily trade water/dust/badvibes proofing for a removable battery (and repairability) any day of the week

I couldn't possibly comment as to why, but as a trans woman I suddenly find myself feeling quite suddenly lighter this afternoon. Specifically as a trans woman.

📢 :transgender: Trans people in East London!

Barts Health NHS Trust are developing specialist sexual health services with All East for trans people in the area.

I have it on good authority that the survey investigating the needs of the service is lacking in responses.

If you've got a few minutes to spare, consider submitting a response: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/trans-shs
