I’m 75 pages in, I barely know 3 characters, and nothing has happened. But I know a lot more about metallurgy than I once did!
You like Neal Stephenson books too, eh?

Dismantler of patriarchy, proponent of humans thriving in harmony with the Universe, sustainer of divestment from morally bankrupt institutions; thoughtful eccentric.
I think a lot about quality of leadership, extending liberty to more people in society, and gaining perspective from more voices. #TransLivesMatter #BlackLivesMatter
I’m also enamored of the problem of how to tell computers to solve problems. Code, programming languages, syntax, semantics, HCI, developer experience, etc.

Would like to see the results of a national poll:
“I’m not a misogynist and I don’t have anything against women, but I don’t think they can or should do the job of President.” Agree or Disagree?
I think it might be revealing. Especially among the *11 million (!)* people who voted for Biden in 2020 and just didn’t vote in 2024.
“Don’t hand over the power you have…”
For those who can afford it, stand and fight or support those who will. Better to say nothing than fawn to authoritarian thugs.
@eric@pierce.xyz No, Polostan, his newest.
Anathem is my favorite book of all time.
I think food ordering apps that include a “pay later” option to sign people up for a payment plan are predatory.
Counterpoint?
@adamwiggins@mas.to Cool, congrats! Working from Berlin or moving to NYC?
@Schneems@ruby.social *slow clap*
There’s really nothing quite like the edgy anticipation of a democratic election in which a major candidate wants to stop doing democracy.
I hope everyone who votes for him because “it’ll be better for the market” or some other nonsense has itchy soles for the rest of their lives.
It’s the year 2024 and I still end up typing “ETOP” then “ATOP" then finally “STOP” on my iPhone in a text message thread.
Do better, Apple.

So, the Ruby ffi gem just doesn't currently install on latest-stable macOS + Ruby (15.1.1 + 3.3.6) (arm64)?
Because of some obscure llvm problem for which the solution is “Best we can do for now is to pass -fno-sanitize=all to disable instrumentation for those source files.”? https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/89087
For real?

Apparently the fix was updating to the latest ffi gem version (1.17.0).
@conradstoll That was the buggiest checkout process I’ve seen from Apple in a long time.
It took 9 tries to get my order placed and it broke at almost every possible step along the way.
@chris_radcliff@spaceup.city Oh, nice, you can take the train in?
A recurring dark pattern I see: aggressive product marketing campaigns with “accidentally” broken Unsubscribe links.
The latest offender? https://nobltravel.com
Cool-looking suitcases, but both a broken-HTML Unsubscribe link *and* an HTTP 500 error if you know how to manually compose the unsubscribe URL.
Emailed their support and they seemed bewildered and confused, which is probably genuine.
Anyone have a Waymo One invite code?
@savetheclocktower@mastodon.social Yeah, makes sense. I’m just curious even how big the barrier is for those who will admit not wanting a woman president in general if we [lie and] say that’s not misogynistic, to give them cover.
But in a vibes-based world I think you’re right: everything has to be focus-grouped if you don’t have a charismatic showperson on the ballot.
Eleven million!
@Schneems@ruby.social Plausible. The only problems then being the [hopefully only] thousands of people who will die because of his administration’s policies, and, you know, if they manage to suspend democracy entirely.
It’s one of those things that seems simultaneously far-fetched and yet happened dozens of times around the world in the last century alone.
