@Joseph_of_Earth@fosstodon.org I'd think running the installer is the easy part, at least on most distros.
From my experience starting out on desktop Linux the harder part was to re-learn some things after having a hard time trying to brute-force old habbits. Less preexisting technical knowledge combined with a bit curiosity could be an advantage here 🙂

@melix@mastodon.xyz Thought so the other day: somehow each new minor release seems to produce new deprecation warnings. Some seem not resolvable without breaking compatibility. Guess we're staying with Gradle 8 for a little while longer...

The timezone database basically never drops entries as there are usecases that involve historical data.
For an OS installer in 2026 you're right that, while technically correct, it is a bit pointless.
From my experience most people don't really concern themselves with timezones, so presenting an obscure option most likely only causes confusion

@alfonsosiciliano@mastodon.bsd.cafe The tzdata contains a file called backward. Zones like Europe/Busingen being listed in backward is basically a deprecation marker. Apps should consider those mappings as otherwise you end up with things like two separate zones for Kyiv.
Besides, since there is no "most of Germany" entry in the timezone db I'd guess someone already special-cased it in the code
