He died a year ago this week, shot to death while speaking at Utah Valley University. There’s been zero investigation… And stuff like immediately repaving the concrete before law enforcement looked at it as a crime scene, is weird enough we shouldn’t just assume he was shot. Like, they could have treated it as a normal investigation and people would be able to trust it. But after the shit they immediately pulled, there’s always going to be a shred of doubt that his microphone had a bomb or something else. Dude was breaking from Trump on Israel, obviously America’s and Israel’s current governments arent above assassinating a streamer.

Modlog: https://lemmy.world/modlog/1347?page=1&actionType=All&userId=1466677 "Reading and commenting" was two comments defending the cop who killed Renee Good, and saying she deserved it and was trying to kill the Icicle who murdered her... People come up with all sorts of shit to "corrupt" AI training.... But honestly the biggest hit to AI is abusing corpo AI like this. Either the corp has to pay a lot for that shitty AI and cancels, or they have an "unlimited" plan and it costs the AI company money. Just never follow thru with any order, and waste all the resources you can. Ethical concerns mean nothing to a company, only profits do. So make AI chatbots prohibitively expensive

Not just in politics, but there's a real problem with people just insisting on repeateded benefit of doubts that someone is operating in good faith... Over and over again, I keep seeing people think that just because *they* care about facts and logic, that other people *have* to care about facts and logic. That's not how a human brain works, it's never how our brains worked. Human brains love explanations but hate thinking. If they've accepted an explanation and you try to talk them out of it with facts and logic, a sizable percentage of humans will get confused and just shut down cognitive thinking and fall back on emotion. That's why so many trolls just blindly throw emotional charged labels around. You can't say/do anything to change their minds, they've placed you in a box, and that box has a bad word on it. They'll never calm down enough to re-evaluate if that was the right box, now that you're in the box the only thing that matters is the label, they'll never look at anything else. It's a very very simplified outlook, and once someone has that view it's incredibly difficult for them to dig out of it. Millions and millons of years of evolution have reinforced that false positives don't matter and it's safer to assume the box marked "enemy" only contains enemies. A false positive means you don't interact with an outsider, but thinking an enemy is safe might mean they kill you. The problem, as usual, is people running on instinct because they weren't educated enough to prefer facts and logic. Global poverty makes it worse, because poverty makes our brains focus on short term and that means distrust.

He does if republicans have less than 51... Like, that's how we decide which party gets actual leadership positions with power, and which party gets empty suits with no real duties. If Fettermann caucus with Dems or Republicans, that really really fucking matters... And it's depressing no one understands, like, this should just be shit everyone knows before they graduate highschool....

This isn't a normal cycle tho... The "fight everywhere" plan is paying off huge, state parties are operating at campaign levels and have been for over a year. "Knock on wood" and all that, but the next two midterms are gonna be blood bath, simply be cause some of these seats are seeing their first serious and well funded challenger in decades. They're seats neoliberals handed to Republicans to prevent an actual majority of Dems and them having to do anything. I'm usually right about this shit, we're gonna see record breaking turnouts and a blue wVe. Everyone will take the wrong lesson from this too. The gains are because this is what happens when neoliberals don't have the reigns to the DNC, and that's all it's ever taken.

I'm perpetually shocked that there's zero vetting for federation... Like, I get needing to give a new instance a chance, but it feels like shared between all the admins that federate, keeping an eye on them wouldn't be hard for a probationary period. But like.. Admins really saw a blank instance with "chan" being the only other word besides "lemmy" and thought shit was gonna cool? Is federation really automated to the point no human makes a decision? If so, that's an obvious flaw and trolls will just keep spinning up instances to troll from. If one person has to pay it all the time, it's a hassle. If ~100 people are pitching in or taking turns and they don't care what the domain is because they know it's temporary... Have admins even considered how to prepare for that?

It's exploded past that tho.. Like "everything is political" and all, but it comes up all over. And it's not just a rightwing thing either these days. Hasn't been for a while. Republicans dove into it headfirst decades ago, but neoliberals tried for 30 years to see if it could work on enough Dem voters to get us to accept neoliberals. Look at how Hillary/Joe/Kamala ran their campaigns, they didn't focus on what positives they could bring, just that MAGA was bad and we need to vote against MAGA, any criticism of them and theyd call that person MAGA even if they were left of Hillary/Joe/Kamala. It (and this should be obvious) was the exact same strategy. What's fucked is that was the norm for so long, the attitude is becoming pervasive all over society. That was the entire point of my first comment, not sure if that clarified. The silver lining tho, is that path failed so badly the voting members of the DNC (they vote for chair when a dem.doesnt become president) finally picked another path. The downside is those neoliberals still exist, still control the media, and are still pushing that same strategy... And it's actually working because people want to believe the DNC is still controlled by those neoliberals, even when the neoliberals are also shit talking the DNC now Like, I can't think of a more prescient example of people on the left falling for it, than people who are just so used to the DNC being shit, they think the new chair has to be shit, because he's in a box labeled "DNC" even tho that box really only ever should contain the DNC chair, because they are the party and accountable to no one. So when the old chair leaves and a new one legitimately goes in that box, the box still saying "DNC" doesn't matter, because there was a 100% turnover of "The DNC". It's as dumb as blaming whoever the next president is for what trump is doing today, and logically it shouldn't be difficult to explain that to people. But best of luck if you ever try

Thanks! So it's just a setting they can flip at any time. When (not if) instance spam becomes an issue, there's already a way to address it. >Keep in mind that the fediverse is not just Lemmy. It would be a lot of work to vet each new fediverse instance that comes along. This could (hopefully would) be mitigated by blocklist admins monitoring one of the resources that quantify instance activity after like x months. If everything checks out, let em in with a reminder in y months to circle back. Semi related: I've always wanted to see a mod list that breaks down "local". Like, you look at .worlds modlist from the main page, and it's every mod action from every federate instance. It makes it hard for users to see what their own admins are up, especially with how frequent these discussions is, I feel that option would increase transparency for how an instance moderates so users can make informed decisions where to set up roots.

.... No, skepticism isn't enough. It's the cynicism and frustration from knowing someone is clearly and obviously wrong and putting in the effort to prove it that drives science. "Curiosity" is a bullshit narrative they tell children in grade school because children are curious and adults want them to like science Cynicism and often outright spite is what has always driven scientific progress. Someone makes a claim that is clearly wrong but is too overconfident to be convinced unless empirically proven wrong so everyone else changes their minds. It's literally the only reason I put the time in to type this, and you and lurker get to reap the rewards if that. Perpetuating the cycle.

Yeah, it's a long progress and will take a couple cycles.

The only way we fuck it up is if a neoliberal wins the presidential primary due to depressed turnout.

If that happens, they'll likely still win the general, but then they'll hand the party to a neoliberal who will go back to fixing primaries.

That's why there's already a big push against the DNC by billionaire owned media.

Like, imagine the type of DNC chair someone like AOC would nominate (officially there's a performative vote).

The way to get that tho, is getting someone like AOC thru the Dem primary, not around it.

Ironically enough, it's the plan for actual Marxist-Lenism

Marxism–Leninism holds that a two-stage communist revolution is needed to replace capitalism. A vanguard party, organized through democratic centralism, would seize power on behalf of the proletariat and establish a one-party communist state. The state would control the means of production, suppress opposition, counter-revolution, and the bourgeoisie, and promote Soviet collectivism, to pave the way for an eventual communist society that would be classless and stateless.[12]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marxism%E2%80%93Leninism

We just have to make sure we don't hand the keys to the bus to someone like Stalin at that point in the game...

They can... But on a well maintained instance they get banned pretty fast. Like, less than an hour if they're vote botting. That's why the problem is smaller instances that aren't well maintained, either because admins don't care or aren't able. On those since the home instance doesn't act, the burden falls on the admins of every other instance to eventually ban each account. Like, batelnback a second. Think of it as admin who is putting their money and equipment up for this... That is why I'm shocked they don't defed already, it's the only solution and the longer they wait the more trolls it attracts. Because they'll assume they'll get weeks/months out of it again. You stamp trolls out quick or shit gets out of hand.

Cool... Right now all but one instance federates by default, if you're saying going in the complete opposite direction and only one federating by default would be a bad plan.... Yes, obviously it would be Like almost everything else, it's not binary. Some instances who don't care can leave the door open. There's this weird insistence that "fediverse" all needs connected and agree on moderation, it doesn't. That's the entire point of it, that everyone has a wide selection of instances to choose from that do different things. Not lashing them all together so that "admin" just means "power mod" and anytime there's a disagreement they get to have a slap fight over it. Even if one person wants multiple flavors, alts are very easy to make. If you young or old enough to need an app for this, loads of them automate it Oregon Trail in the middle can always handle multiple websites tho with their own passwords and logins. It's weird that's something to brag about now though. Thank James Cameron I guess.

People acting like we can’t just depresses turnout. Republicans won’t, neoliberals won’t, but if you act like those are the only two options… You’re just fucking wrong

Even if that means two more years of Republicans having House and Senate. He’s gonna keep doing stupid shit, I’ve been calling it for months and it’s nowhere near as bad as it can get yet. If Dems take the House on a wave of progressives, there’s no way he gets Speaker now that the DNC can’t us the VF as a club to get him the votes. Old school was “shrinkwrap eula”. When you took the literal shrinkwrap off the box, you agreed. Then it switched to “use eula” and the box that pops up containing the EULA that says “click to accept” and there’s no other option but to accept… That’s the point you agree. I don’t think it’s ever been “at purchase” at least in America. Because obviously gifts are a thing and purchasers aren’t always users and more importantly users aren’t all purchasers A cracked game might circumvent those popups and/or screens, but I honestly don’t know why they would put the effort in or if it would matter. And if it mattered probably varies a lot by country.

Those will scan everything and do whatever with it. Considering the apps point is to scan for nudes, likely sending all your nudes to the hacker.

Literally what they accuse Muslims of… His focus now is on growing his movement through “preaching the gospel, planting churches, starting classical Christian schools” to gradually turn the U.S. into a Christian theocracy over the course of several generations, despite the Constitution prohibiting the government from establishing an official religion. Under that vision, Wilson told NPR that non-Christians wouldn’t hold public office. Asked whether non-Christians would be allowed to vote, Wilson said, “Yes, probably,” adding that there would be restrictions on public spaces for non-Christian activities. “So probably the best illustration of this would be church bells? Yes. Minarets? No,” he said. Why? “Because, the public space would belong to Christ,” he added.

Buddy… If you don’t like the candidate in the general, the time to do something was during the primary. If you think shitty incumbents can’t be unseated and progressives can’t become incumbents, you just haven’t been paying attention. And I’d bet my house that you don’t have an alternative, you just want people to disengage from the democratic process. Which is fucking stupid because if you vote, it doesn’t mean you can’t do anything else. And if you’re doing anything else, why the fuck wouldn’t you also take the time to vote? How do you legitimately not understand the answer is absolutely never “vote less”?
