In 2008 I showed up to Y Combinator Startup School to take photos of speakers and learn how to start a startup.

I was an engineer and designer and had never started a company before.

Today I am the new President & CEO of Y Combinator, an organization that is a true magnet for smart ambitious high integrity people who believe technology can solve the problems facing humanity.

And those that believe are those that do.

Looking forward to an epic 2023. 🙏

Algorithms for life: “Politely withholding your preferences puts the computational problem of inferring them on the group.

Politely asserting your preferences (I’m inclined toward x. What do you think?) helps shoulder the cognitive load of moving the group toward resolution.”

“Starting a company requires a lot of staring into the abyss, because it involves making lots of serious mistakes (building the wrong thing, hiring the wrong person); to move quickly, you need to be fast at acknowledging and fixing them.”

Ideas we believe can become self fulfilling prophecies if we take action to make them a reality.

The same goes for ideas about people.

This is one reason to be open and optimistic about meeting new people— any given person might be a friend or collaborator.

Faults are human; what matters is to go further, to live, to be intense, to aim high, and to be loyal. —Tom Sachs

Pretty cool thing: Because of the Internet, everyone who is into thing X can meet each other now

Before, ideas of all kinds would live/die alone in one person stuck in one place in time. You could escape only through books.

Now the infinite book connects you to all others.

This is a common untold story of the Asian American diaspora:
Communist asset forfeiture, harrowing refugee journey, starting over from nothing, access to education, and rebirth.
This is an American story, of resilience and struggle.

You can always add to who you are

Humans are not fixed and “change” is too zero sum

PG in 2008: "Steam power was a sliver of the British economy when Watt started working on it. But his work led to more work till that sliver had expanded into something bigger than the whole economy of which it had initially been a part.

The same thing could happen with the Internet."

Good prediction
