“there is a global far right conspiracy that attempts to reinvent alchemy, colonize space and build a machine god, which they intend to use to enslave everyone else. it’s informed by misreading of old scifi and racism, but it only took off after certain hp fanfic was written. currently it’s commanded by a californian polycule with a drug problem, but also counts in their ranks white house officials, and possibly some from russian government” unfortunately this does not make a great conversation starter. whaat? a cult took over an entire government of south korea? this could never happen here

wtf is deal of that segyges person. now they’re convinced that openai will solve room temperature superconductors in silico real soon, because altman vagueposted about it and this all based on lk-99 fraud case, nevermind that there’s no high temperature superconductivity theory, or how prohibitively computationally expensive computational chemistry is, and i guess it’s not accurate enough anyway, this all with people that do computational chemistry coming in their thread trying to explain this, then posts this

cmos logic still beats it, because main source of heat are switching losses (all these gate + parasitic capacitances being charged and discharged, and some related phenomena). relays store more energy, and that makes situation worse, even if you make them as MEMS

there are some religions that put more emphasis on orthodoxy and there are religions that put more emphasis on orthopraxy. christianity would be more in the former category and buddhism, especially buddhism-as-mind-hacking-tool would be the latter. rationalists are just religious in a way that is less common in the west tangent >the kindergarten/elementary school / New Atheism view of religion is “believe in big sky father, ask him personally for good stuff, get good stuff”. there is some evidence that a couple of ancient polytheist religions worked this way, sort of acoup.blog/…/collections-practical-polytheism-par… you might wonder if there’s some space for new atheist racism to happen, as religions that do more of orthopraxy are not western or ancient (therefore primitive)

somehow i think that there should be a way to match edges of these blocks and unscramble the image this way. note that the more of unscrambled image you have the easier it should get. however, if you took every block and dispersed its pixels (xor something) into all new blocks, that would be much harder

you get 1.6MJ/kg just by irradiating this thing, nothing else is needed and its storable for months as noncorrosive room temperature liquid to make ammonia you need to have pv to turn light to electricity then make hydrogen out of it then make ammonia in haber process, each step generates losses and none are practical on small scale

there's been a claim of 200ish GW of new datacenters announced but it's only something like 5GW being built and only a fraction of that is actually finished or powered on. this mostly goes for american ai dcs, which are 3/4 of them all. not sure if it holds for emirates, but it would completely not surprise me if it's the case there also https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-ai-industry-is-lying-to-you/#how-much-actual-data-center-capacity-came-online-in-2025-my-estimate-3gw-of-it-load >Except it is a problem, man! As I covered in this week’s free newsletter [link above], I estimate that only around 3GW of actual IT load (so around 3.9GW of power) came online last year, and as Sightline reported, only 5GW of data center construction is actually in progress globally at this time, despite somewhere between 190GW and 240GW supposedly being in progress. In reality, data centers take forever to build (and obtaining the power even longer than that), but nobody needs to harsh their flow by looking into what’s actually happening. https://www.wheresyoured.at/premium-how-much-of-the-ai-bubble-is-real/ (paywalled) linked claim for 190GW https://www.sightlineclimate.com/research/data-center-outlook linked claim for 240GW https://paulkedrosky.com/chart-of-the-day-data-center-buildout-slowed-sharply/

some goods and intermediates have large energy content, like, if you wanted to use energy from large pv farm in, say, morocco, then it might make more sense to ship bauxite in and aluminum bars out (it takes some 50MJ/kg to make aluminum) simplicity of the system would be a factor in small, unattended installations like for space heating for single home

you can distill it before use if you are so inclined, but it would take dry ice and somewhat specialized glassware (distillation of ammonia is more common and it would work just about the same way). there is food grade/cosmetics grade (99.99%) dme available. just in order to not deal with it i would use diethyl ether instead, which can be distilled with normal equipment

Stirling engines are woefully inefficient tho, PV panels are better unless you're intending to supplement heat source with biomass or such. In a climate where most of energy is used for heating and little to none on AC, it just makes more sense to use solar collectors instead of PV because most of energy use will be in form of heat anyway, and per square meter collector will deliver much more. If you can couple excess heat production to seasonal energy storage, this gets you most or all of heat needs year round covered by solar, if you don't there's still free hot water in the summer and seriously lowered gas bill through the year. Small PV panel might make sense to keep pumps running or cover some of the rest of needs but won't shift balance heavily either way. In a place where major use of energy is AC this approach makes no sense and PV panels with daily or a bit longer lasting storage of energy, be it in batteries or thermal (tanks of cold glycol or ice or whatever) would be the way to go, because the most sunny day is also the day when you need AC the most and this way you get most of your energy needs covered

from what i understand, it’s also impossible to copy this thing and every single instance will turn out slightly different. also it will continue to learn on whatever data it is fed so you might end up with something useful, that will degrade, is on a timer and has no backups

spotted on r/betteroffline: Nscale, one of neocloud companies, released S-1. even when they show “adjusted EBITDA” and “adjusted operational loss” where they exclude, among other things, depreciation and stock based compensation, they never break even only on that “adjusted operational loss”, net losses are multiple hundred % (ie. they lose 4x-23x as much as they receive in revenue) but yeah, it’s profitable on inference, it’s the worst it’ll ever be and other marketing lies from twitter’s most concussed boosters

now you have it straight from source: e/acc, distinct from EA, is a rival ideology about technology. (somewhere in this mix someone called me e/acc. i am not. if you’re going to classify me in this space, i am something like a Kurzweilian h+ e/acc is a troll ideology for upsetting EA people and scamming pmarca.) then he complains about sneerclub for some reason, damn i can’t guess why LLMs doing Great Things Worth Ruining The World Over in medical research there are entire wet labs whose software stack predates openai. go and ask anyone who works in a moderately long operating lab if there’s any load bearing Thing that runs under windows xp control or older (there will be). there are some extremely limited applications of pre-llm ml in drug design, but it’s trained on entirely different type of data and it does entirely different thing and i’d say it’s not load bearing. these things are expected to be fed with new data from testing new things provided in previous iterations and if you hit something you’ll get there on your own. all of that data is noisy
