Well, I moved instances here’s my first post. May as well introduce myself.

Who the hell am I? Good question. You know when you have to introduce yourself at work. They go around the table and everyone has something reasonable to say about themselves? I usually freeze and have no idea what to say. I ramble and dissociate and eventually the hell is over and we’re on to the next victim.

I like to sing in general, often in choirs (popular and classical). I like talking to a captive (not necessarily captivated) audience like at tech talks. Can you imagine, people would actually pay to hear me ramble. Poor fools. I have ADHD so I often digress as is already quite evident.

I like to collect retrocomputers esp 8 bits. I don’t know why, I don’t use them. They’re my dollhouse. Except a little less creepy but a bit nerdier.

I really like programming languages, but in a very amateur way. Need someone to write hello world in a ton of languages? That’s me. Need someone who can remember the actual syntax and keywords without constantly looking them up? Sorry, better move on.

I’m concerned about our future with AI. How will it change the economy, how we learn, how easy we are to manipulate, the balance of power in the hands of a few big tech companies, how will people learn when thinking is outsourced. It’s frightening.

I’m jaded, big tech and the government do not have our best interests at heart. I’m on a mission to move off of Big Tech, little things like not using gmail, Codeberg instead of GitHub for code repository, not using Amazon even if it costs more, you get the idea. They have way too much power and treat employees and customers like shit.

Ok well, that was depressing. Let’s move on to the next person ❤️

if you’re miserable at your job, really think about leaving sooner rather than later. i stayed for just shy of a year. and i still have nightmares months later. the trauma is happening and its real. it’s so hard to know how much you’re suffering until you start healing, but that misery is telling you something.

Thanks everyone who went to ElixirConf EU, you guys were amazing. I talked about building a mulltiplayer game server using Elixir and OTP. The video will eventually be out and I'll be sure to link to it. I'll be at Goatmire next, not presenting but fully "present" to experience the goating and miring.

success, particularly professional success, is a lot less related to happiness than i had once thought.

@nuwagaba2@mastodon.social it was 159€ berlin to paris - i think thats about the price of a plane ticket or less after you consider the luggage fees they add . maybe its cheaper if you book more in advance

@isabel@akko.isabelroses.com would be cool do a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled test. the control arm uses what, ubuntu ? then some other arms use gentoo and nixos, def need arch in there. outcomes are measured through qualitative surveys and also shell and file edit history, so we can see what they tried to do and where they failed/succeeded. i still think most people would be better off starting with a more simple distro.

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@lawik/116396560861062283 tl;dr devs do everything last minute. i'd be more pissy if i werent exactly the same way. this is why execs are always giving us insane deadlines because we only deliver things when theres a deadline!

@lawik very interesting idea. unlike companies with product or scalable services, it’s not clear what i’d be looking for in return as an individual consultant. depending on hourly rate that could represent a decent chunk of work , maybe a week? i think the credibility building is a good angle along the lines of writing a book or doing a podcast. maybe they can get a piece hosted in the goatmire site or some goatmire gazette "book" that gets published online. something durable but doesn’t cost goatmire much to do.
