Climate scientists: the climate has always changed, over very long timescales, due to many different natural factors

Everyone: yes, please tell me more…

Climate scientists: also, the recent rapid warming is primarily due to burning fossil fuels

Most people: thanks, perhaps we ought to do something about that?

Small minority and fossil fuel companies: it’s all a hoax… except the bit when you said the climate changed before

Wherever you live in the world, your climate is getting warmer.

21st June is #ShowYourStripes day when we encourage everyone to use the warming stripes graphics to talk about climate change and how we are all already experiencing the consequences.

Dear Mastadon hivemind:

The http://www.BiodiversityStripes.info website is highlighting biodiversity loss, globally and regionally using a similar concept to the climate stripes.

We are looking for other sources of biodiversity data which can be turned into stripes to highlight this critical issue.

Any leads for long & coherent time series welcome!

Mapping changes in temperature: every year from 1850 to 2023

2023 was the warmest year on record.

This 'small multiples' representation of observed changes in temperature show how the planet is heating rapidly almost everywhere.

We develop a physically plausible ‘causal chain’ as one approach to demonstrate the connections between global carbon dioxide emissions & real-life events, using a case study of flood risk in one river basin in the UK.

Replying to
@towi This graphic uses the annual average, not the monthly average (which might hit 430ppm this month, before declining again in its normal annual cycle).

Quantifying exposure biases in early instrumental land surface air temperature observations

Very detailed work by Emily Wallis et al. to analyse potential biases in different types of method for measuring temperatures in the 19th century.

@carbonwoman@norden.social Late February is when we are usually able to update all the graphics after collating the various datasets.

@BenjaminBuse@climatejustice.social In this case it is average rainfall on wet days - a standard metric.
