@oldladyplays A barman I once knew would tell people he didn't like the look of that it was a gay bar. The first time I heard him say it I asked him about it as it wasn't a "gay bar" and his reasoning, based on years of experience, was the type of person that was put off by that statement were the type of people that he didn't want in his bar.

🤔 What if we vibe built physical infrastructure?

Here's a bridge in the place where you asked for it: it looks like some other bridges and the ratio of concrete to steel is statistically consistent with those similar looking bridges.

@jhpot I get a lot of mileage out of Syncthing: I have one shared folder it to keep my notes and to-do lists (simple markdown files) available on all my devices, I have one folder for my music collection (DRM free mp3/ogg files) on my laptops and home server, I have another folder that keeps my phone photos available on all my devices (and thus backed up on my home server), other folders for a couple of research project, &c. It stands in for the functionality provided by a number of different cloud services and has the additional advantage of making them also work offline by keeping local copies always available.

Dawkins was always a religious nut job. He was unusual in being a religous nut job who believed God didn't exist but the "theism" axis is orthogonal to the "religous nut job" axis, even if the data points that have prominent observability tend to cluster around correlation at high values of both.

@aldroid@mastodon.social When it came out someone in my circle of friends changed it to "get out your tits for cotton eye joe" and since then whatever it was supposed to be has ceased to exist in my memory.

@jhpot Yeah, I went from Bittorrent Sync to SyncThing but they both provide that local-first, peer-to-peer syncing that's the real enabler here: the more you use it the more you find you can use it for.

@semanticist @adam A friend of mine at uni did his final year Chemistry project classifing oils using their IR absorbtion characterisrics using a "neural network" he found on a news group: it fitted on a floppy disk and ran on a 386.

@beep Interesting timing, I added the same thing to one of my worry stones last week.

I wanted more control over the text formatting than image generation tools like Imagemagick give so I created an SVG with ids for the text and then replace the content of those XML nodes with my text before rendering it as a raster image.

Standard disclaimer: there is no right/wrong/better/best solution to worry stone problems - the process of finding one's own solution is the point of doing it, any "deliverable outcome" is a handy byproduct.

@beep Yeah, that's one of the reasons why I use Inkscape for the SVG wrangling as it has better text handling. That produces non-standard SVGs which you then need Inkscape to render properly but it also works fine as a command line tool for rendering so the tool lock-in was acceptable for me for now. (Being a worry stone item I might well rip it all out again in a few weeks if I have a different idea - or, at the other end of the scale, it will sit there forgotten and working fine for years until I change something else that inadvertently breaks it... 🤷 )
