Brain dump:

• CrossFit going good. Glad I'm doing it. Well, I can't do it, but I'm trying and presumably if I keep trying long enough I'll be able to do some of it someday. Broadly speaking, if I take the lowest bar for any sub-section, pretty happy if I can do 1/3 of that. 1/2 or 3/4th if it isn't weaponizing my body weight against me (most of them do).
• Heading out to another ~annual tropical paradise for scuba. In the pre-travel worry phase that usually lifts once it's too late if I forgot something. Then the hell of planes. Then the good part -- actually being somewhere awesome for a while. Hopefully last year's scuba sinus problems aren't going to be this time.
• 10 months at the new job. I'm the only human left doing the AWS datalakery they hired me into. So umm, not sure what the future is going to look like there. Pretty weird having 1000 employees, but I'm the only 1 (left) that does what they hired me to do? I have other skills(?) but confidence is not high they'd use them if they pull the remaining plugs?
• The meds have definitely taken my bottoms away. Can't tell if they've also killed my joy too. I'll find out next week.
• They scanned for my crown for my molar I split. So they're 3D printing it now or whatever? To mail to my dentist. Never felt so much like a cyborg when they're in my mouth using a literal wrench cranking where biology used to be.

Previous boost: Would prefer to boost the author, who I know, but looks like they're not commenting. Hope they're doing OK.

So I guess I'll just make sure my 11ty is open source up to date w/ the latest on GitHub for my ... 5? static sites and then let that ride... for years? And eventually those sites won't build anymore so I'll migrate 'em to whatever the new one is?

Maybe I'll fall back to Perl's Template::Toolkit? I think I only have 3 TT sites still out on the Internet...?

I assume this is a well-studied phenomenon in behavioral economics. If you happen to know the name of it, let me know. (Is it just FOMO? I think 99% of the time normal FOMO doesn't work on me?)

I bought an assault rifle when Obama rumors were that we might not be allowed to buy them anymore.

Trump cancelling the 30% federal tax credit on residential solar panels effective January 1 triggered my purchase of solar panels.

So a million times you can tell me "limited time offer" and I'll ignore you. But apparently in specific instances I very much buy a thing I hadn't bought for many years because of imminent availability / cost.

Maybe it's just when presidents FOMO me? ... That can't be true, I've purchased 0 of Trump's many scams.

Fascinating.

Kudos to those who work injustice full time and keep fighting. I don't think I'm strong enough to dedicate my entire life effort to a system, just to watch fuckers ignore the rules without consequence. 🇺🇸 @theleftistlawyer@mastodon.social

If I was driven to be a scientist, at least I'd still hold out hope that I could make a living abroad.

Is this late stage capitalism or do I have early onset dementia? #podcast https://pca.st/episode/0a089f68-27ee-4beb-97d2-eb059a41a71c

One chunk of lore in my head was that my father operated a linotype machine when he was in college. Molten lead cast into "a line of type" and then melted back down blew my mind.

Unfortunately, my memory was wrong apparently. Dad reports:

I never had the opportunity to operate a linotype, but when I was editor of the Graceland Tower, linotype was how it was printed in Lamoni Iowa. We switched to offset printing in Leon, where the image is burned onto a metal plate from a negative, giving much higher resolution and more flexibility in layout….But those linotypes had lots more mystique! 🤓
