Somewhere between libertarian and voluntaryist/borderline anarchist. I believe government has one legitimate function: to protect the rights of the individual, and if it can't do that, and only that, it doesn't deserve to exist.

@aral@mastodon.ar.al What you have to realize is ICE has what amounts to a no constitution zone anywhere within a hundred miles of an international border, including coastlines; they need no reason to stop you in here. This affects all of FL, MS, Louisiana, and NJ, petty much all of New England, most of CA, OR, and WA, NY (all of NYC), MI, WI, PA, large chunks of every other border state north and south.. basically about half the land mass and 9/10's the population. I suppose Colorado is still okay to visit.

@killyourfm@layer8.space Exactly why I don't pay for streaming services. I use free Pandora on occasion to discover music, but then go out and acquire physical media where possible. I have thousands of tracks on hundreds of full albums, and I don't need internet to listen to any if it.

@itsfoss@mastodon.social ... on a DVD and take with. Some years back I stopped bothering because internet is everywhere, and there's at least 4 CPU architectures I'm working with now so as a private user I wouldn't be saving anything noteworthy bandwidth wise, just take up extra storage unnecessarily. This I don't get why it has become the problem that it apparently is.. I was thinking about these volunteers that run these servers 20 years ago, and bandwidth itself isn't free either. [2/3]

@itsfoss@mastodon.social Storage is relatively cheap, so why aren't these large corporate scale entities running their own local network mirrors to maintain their own machines? It's not hard to set up, saves a ton of external bandwidth, saving money for both parties. What's that paradox, where having more available results in even more getting used up? Come on guys, every IT person on the planet knows (probably more than one way) how to fix this. Stick a PFY on it, you can solve this tomorrow! ¢¢ [3/3]

@itsfoss@mastodon.social Many years ago I advocated using rsync to create a local repository mirror of anything I intended to use/install across multiple machines. I used rsync because it was handy and bandwidth efficient at keeping local packages up to date, but the source mirror may be reluctant due to processor use. Anyway, the idea was one big download, then I'm not being a parasite for every machine (I had several, were often adding more, and this was before ubiquitous WiFi so also handy to throw .. [1/3]
