Game show criticism, friday night Top of the Pops, queer joy, and whatever other stuff gets us through the day.

They-them. Other than queer rights, this is mostly politics-free.

"Love can't turn around" - Farley "Jackmaster" Funk Darryl Pandy is back, and even more driven than before! Off goes the hat! He'll never win Top of the Hats like that! Then one shoe! And its pair! "You are the best, Top of the Pops!" Crowd improvisation! Live vocals! The dead fly dance! Top of the Pops is at its best when it looks unpredictable and living on the edge of its seat. This is great television. #TOTP #DarrylPandy

"Bound 4 da reload" - Oxide and Neutrino Uk garage had been a big thing in London during 1999, and was breathlessly promoted by Radio 1 as The Next Big Thing. Bassy and frenetic, it could fill massive floors and sell out huge clubs. The uk garage scene imploded on New Year's Eve, when promoters hired the biggest warehouses in town and tried to sell hugely overpriced tickets. Nobody came. But the ashes lived on, with this mashup of the theme from BBC1's "Casualty", a sample from "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels", and some clever speeding up. Worth a listen, brings some nostalgia value, but i fear this song outstays its welcome by a couple of minutes. #TOTP #OxideAndNeutrino

Our second Mystery Year comes as new drug AZT might bring some relief for AIDS sufferers. It's the day Lofty and Michelle were due to marry in "The East Enders". There was laugh-out-loud comedy in "Lenny Henry Tonight", cereberal comedy in "Alas Smith and Jones", and not very funny comedy in "The Liberal Party Assembly". Top of the Pops was hosted by The Queen of England, Janice Long. #TOTP

"The facts of life" - Black Box Recorder Good song on Good Friday shocker! Sara Nixey is on vocals, with Luke Haines from The Auteurs, and John Moore from The Jesus & Mary Chain on guitars. Luke's always made unsettling music: sweet sounds coupled to perverse or violent lyrics. Here, a cut-glass voice trills over an Air-esque backing track, and sing-speaks about adolescent sexual awakenings. It's like an anglophone version of Serge Gainsbourg. Loved by Mark Radcliffe, and a bit of a lost classic. #TOTP #BlackBoxRecorder

"Amazed" - Lonestar Terry Wogan had a soft spot for country songs that told a story; he'd championed Faith Hill and Gretchen Peters, and played this track a bit. So does his successor. After two months on release, and two months charting around number 25, Capital Radio was finally playing the song. It almost broke through to become a major hit. The four-piece band from Tennessee honed their craft by playing 500 gigs in two years, and honed their songwriting to make syrupy observational songs. For my money, they got even more saccharine in later years, and i can't honestly recommend an album. #TOTP #Lonestar

This week, i'm looking at "I Kissed...", the queer dating show on BBC3.

It's the one where young gays and lesbians isolate themselves away from the rest of the world, and see if they can form stable relationships.

On the way, there's light-hearted interference from Dannii Minogue, some opportunities to end the experience.

Best of all, some conversations about what it's like to be young and queer, the sort we don't see anywhere else on network television.

John Bishop hosts, with a big crowd behind him.

Basic idea: can a solo player be more accurate than the average of the studio crowd?

Asks a guesstimate question (e.g. how many rainy days does Manchester get every year?) See the player’s answer, then roll in the audience to give a distribution.

Who’s closer? £10,000 if it’s the player, £2500 knocked off if it’s the crowd. The player can join the crowd if they want and are reasonably close on their third and final Q.

Endgame. Someone from the crowd comes down and gets true-or-false questions; the crowd also answer. Better score from five quickies wins the dosh, which was over £20,000. Split between the crowd, that’d be £100.

John snarks at some of the most egregious outliers, a bit more cruel than Lee Mack on The 1% Club.

Show is loud, bright, keeps moving. Could be a grower.
