Purely from a manufacturer perspective, I would go Lenovo. Ive had more problems with Dell hardware than with Lenovo hardware. In terms of what can run, both are capable. I’d lean towards more ram in general, and the 4 laptops I have are lenovo workhorses, the newest of which is ~5yrs old, the oldest ~10yrs old, all happily chugging along just fine. So I’d vote Lenovo.

Shitty hard right rich douche put together dotfiles for arch, called it a distro, and was given lots of money from 1password. DHH being a hard right rich douche is not news, but 1password giving $300k to aforementioned hard right asswipe is recent news. Thats a reasonable summary IMO.

From Wikipedia: Gottheimer’s net worth was between $16.9 and $75.3 million in 2023, and he and his wife Marla Tusk, who is general counsel at the political consulting firm Tusk Strategies, reported $897,617 in joint income AIPAC isnt the only reason.

Nope, and I wouldn’t recommend it either. They are generally not great with mapping IMO, no matter the model. And really this is better managed with a quick diagram and a spreadsheet. If you want some software, look at netbox for this, you can add in validation rules and all kinds of automations as well. But really, use a spreadsheet.

Are you suggesting time travel as a solution? Bike lines to commuter hubs for mass transit is the answer I’d go with, personally.

You can, I’m just saying be prepared for disappointment. The amount of effort you need to put in, imo, you could have had a spreadsheet and been done. And then used that with a script to autogenerate some mermaidml to get a purdy drawing out of it (which I highly recommend leveraging Beautiful-Mermaid ). And then you can feed that to an llm and make your queries about ports or other uses, to me thats a much better use/approach. To each their own though.

My workstations are Debian, my laptops are a mix of Debian and Arch, same with test hardware. They all look the same - KDE as my desktop environment, no generic software added at install, just adding what I want. If you were to use any one of them purely from the GUI (KDE), I doubt you’d know which was which without checking version info. Linux is a kernel. A desktop environment is the GUI. The distro is packaging. The difference between distributions is predominantly what is packaged up, the tool used to install/update, and an overarching philosophy on those tools. Debian is about being stable. This means more dated packages, but running into issues from an update is (mostly) not even a question when running the stable branch. Amazing for workstations and older hardware IMO. Arch updates constantly. Updates can introduce breaking changes, even minor ones, which can interrupt workflow. It also means the latest and greatest features are right there and ready quickly. I like arch for testing and making use of recent hardware that may not have support elsewhere yet. You could also build entirely from source, use a downstream from Debian like Mint (Debian Edition) or Kubuntu, or downstream of Arch like SteamOS or EndeavourOS. Downstream distributions add more opinion under a more particular approach to their upstream counterparts. For some its to make the system easier to install (EndeavourOS vs Arch), add more recent features (Kubuntu vs Debian), or to make something incredibly specialized (SteamOS, formerly based on Debian and now based in Arch, highly focused on gaming). The only thing thats “pure” Linux is the kernel. Everything else comes down to purpose and preference.

No, but you can disable WiFi and use a network scanner to check for devices looking for WiFi. My (not LG) Samsung doesn’t, but that I’d not in any way a guarantee other Samsung devices won’t, just this particular one.

I agree with that, but sorry I don’t understand how thats related to biking more and mass transit, other than a complete rework of the layout of towns and cities across the country that would take decades or more to have an impact.

Kind of the whole thing behind Purge (its been a while, so I don't remember if this was the first or what) was that the CEOs and other very wealthy would hide themselves away while people killed each other, as a distraction from their own terrible actions throughout the year. So yeah, it was kind of the point that there would be a boss still after the purge.

For example i doubt that many people enjoy working at garbage disposable or basically any waste disposal

Ehhh I bet you'd be wrong. Only anecdotal obviously, but at practice and games for the kids, a lot of dads just chat when there isnt much going on. A couple of them work for the local garbage company. One of them commented that he doesnt know how I stay inside and work all day, he really enjoys being outside with the trucks in the morning, then enjoying the afternoon outside with the kids. Another one is a mechanic for them, he always thought the trucks were cool, and he still enjoys working on them (though he will 100% tell you, in great detail, which manufacturers suck for various parts). Haven't talked much with the last one about work, I think he is the only one just straight up doing it for money though.

And who knows, maybe the guy who likes being outside says that to be positive about his choices in life, but I see him at the park with the kids a lot, I've run into him heading out to the trails on his mountain bike, etc, so I believe him that he's perfectly happy doing it.

Automation for unwanted tasks is great though, I agree, and where automation should be focused.

Debian. For decades. My first installation was slack and from then until now has been a mix of more things than I care to list, but includes things like freebsd on a DEC multia, a sparcstation pizza box with a 2.6ish kernel maybe?, along with things like Ubuntu, suse, fedora, centos, gentoo, ive built from scratch, I ever remember the days of configuring x with fvwm95 because I thought it would be easier for my parents. I always go back to Debian. Though I'm happy with arch when I want something 'current'.

Tbh I'd kind of trust them more. Even if they got off thinking of my feet later (which, who cares, have at it), they are going to put a lot more effort and get a lot more knowledge than someone just doing it for the high billing rate, dont you think? And probably care more about the quality of my arch than the guy writing a prescription for orthotics because the manufacturer just bought him a nice dinner. Just because they are pervs doesnt mean they'd be bad at it, I'd say they'd be even better at it than most. Wouldn't you think?

Check b stock. Typically its scratch & dent, sometimes demo or trade show use. Still gets a warranty (which is better on commercial in most cases), and usually a pretty sizable discount. If you can find a local distributor, they will sometimes sell off prior year stock for a really good price.

  • Areas of entry where there might be a better view for capturing the face or features of an intruder, specifically with better lighting conditions.
  • Watching pets that are home alone
  • Keeping an eye on someone, like small kids or an adult with a debilitating issue
  • Insurance discounts

I have indoor cameras. I'm not really worried about the first one, the second is no longer a concern unfortunately as my dog passed away from cancer in January. I mostly have them for the last item at this point.

That said, ive used them to help keep an eye on my Dad, who had ALS. He knew he could signal to the camera for help (usually the remote fell, but a couple of times it was for medical equipment). All internal though, not internet connected.

When my kids were still in cribs, I set up cameras in their rooms as well. Hearing phantom cries is a real thing, and I had no interest in the crappy-yet-expensive baby monitors.

So yeah, they have their uses.

A lot of the small cheap knockdowns aren't metal, they are LDF or *maybe* MDF. Ply is solid choice, I'd recommend an L bracket for the corners, 8 in total. For the casters get at least one locking, it'll save some headache. I'd also get at least one vent or blank 1RU plate to make sure you're lining up right between the rails, and to mount the rails with enough room top/bottom. A second set of rails for the back will let you double up on mounting front and back to make better use of the space if you've got low-depth devices to put in there. Have fun!

Even helpful when they aren't alone tbh, just going downstairs into the basement to do some laundry could be an issue - some of the medical equipment would sound like a tornado siren, others would beep-boop like a new dishwasher or washing machine/dryer finishing. So the cameras were pretty handy even with people around for when we had to go to another room/floor.

For where I am there is a similar fee for the rezoning, but I don’t think that matters to them at this point. Even with the 3-5 acre minimum plots some of the towns have. I’ve seen a few straight up empty plots (no buildings but actively farmed) in the 20-80 acre range sell for millions, that sold less than 10 years ago in the $200k-$400k range. They’ve already been split up into new lots, starting price of the homes are $900k and up, not even built yet. The fee on the taxes is less than 10% of the sale price according to public records.

Now that’s the kind of thing my wife would love to have. Maybe at some point we’ll take away someone else’s space occupier. We’ve got a few pieces of furniture, the one in really not looking forward to is the musical instruments. We’re talking full grand piano, player piano, pneumatic uprights, etc. They are huge. There is no way my wife won’t want at least one, and I’m probably the only one who knows how to do the maintenance despite it being her parents stuff and she has a few siblings.

Police are modern. They came into existence after the United States did. Before that, people relied on the community - if one person was stolen from, the community considered it a collective responsibility to address the issue. If it was an issue between two people in the community, a trusted person would mediate. Sometimes this was someone in a leadership role, but other times it was Taylor from down the road, because they want someone who is always calm, fair, and reasonable, and both people trust Taylor. Just like there are lots of other things police currently handle that they shouldn’t, like people having a mental health crisis.

They are, but I mostly use the library’s 3d printer. When I get to have a bit more room I’ll probably set one up in a workshop, but right now it would just eat up space. I have a large format printer, so I size and design on the PC, print to large format cardstock, then do cutouts with a blade.

As someone actively searching for farmland for farm purposes, one thing farmers could do when they decide to sell is actually consider use with their buyers and the price they put on it. Pricing it at 6-15 times the price of 10 years ago based on what developers will pay will also price people who want to actually farm it out of the market.

Bigscreen only just came back around, I wouldn’t go too heavy there yet (and I’m testing it out already myself) Get flex launcher instead. Simple config, does the job. In terms of specs, there is a lot in your list that can vary, and make those specs jump. Where to start, IMO, would be a 7th gen Intel. If an 11th gen is an option, there and up transcoded av1. For storage you’re going to have to do the math yourself in terms of what you’ll have. I have 40tb of media. I used to have a 1tb drive for everything. Storage is how much you want to allocate, nothing more or less. Ram is similar. Find the worst case game, most overloaded with plugins Minecraft server or whatever, and start there on memory use. JF won’t take much, your game choice might.

I’d like to agree on that, but the reality is they won’t even bother talking to anyone. Everything goes through the realtor, they don’t seem to ever want anyone to show up without. On the way back from an outing with the kids, we swung by one and just parked on the street and looked and talked. The owner happened to be outside, and we got “You’ll have to talk to the realtor if you want to see anything” then he just straight up went inside. If I could find a better option for finding the sorts of farmers mentioned in the article who want people who will work the land and not just tear it up, I’d use it. I have yet to find one though.

Ehhh I’d call that a foundational element and not policing as we’d consider it to be today. It was a very limited scope (known criminals, enforcing curfews, and dealing with riots). Modern policing would be more London in the 1830s as the first police force, with American policing in the 1840s and beyond, with the american roots in the slave patrols from the 1700s. Earlier models were more based on the mutual pledge system, with groups of families (tithings) have an assigned tithingman, with groups of tithings (a hundred). This became the basis of the constable.

Yeah everything is a player (including the piano), and aside from the instruments themselves there are hundreds of rolls - originals (which my kids saw how they are made with an old Mr. Rogers episode I put on for them), customs my FIL made of his own music, and some modern pop we’ve picked up for them. And yep, AMICA is a great option, my FIL is a member still I think. We are definitely going to take at least one of them, I have a feeling it will be the big pneumatic upright. Which I’m prepping a controller conversion for to allow him to do midi with it to test playback before making a new roll. The controls all work but I need to replace one of the relays… And now you know why that’s the one we’ll likely end up taking (and its also one of the bigger ones).

So now its state run torture and public shaming, along with the added bonuses of legalized slavery and corporate profiteering. I would really recommend you learn a bit about what’s actually going on.
