@arstechnica@mastodon.social “claimed to have concerns over the study methodology” is code for it didn’t agree with department dogma. The highest bar possible for anything supporting vaccines and a very low bar for any criticism seems to be the order of the day.

Finally hereditary peers have been removed from the UK House of Lords. Personally this should just be the start.

Bishops next, the Lords Spiritual have no place in Government in the 21st century.

Then just get rid of the whole Lords and Ladies sh1t. When Lord Cameron was foreign secretary were other countries impressed or did they just laugh?

The UK may be the land of the Magna Carta and the home of the mother of Parliaments but it shouldn’t be run as if it was still the Middle Ages.

Vaccination is a subject close to my heart as I have a suppressed immune system and worry about being infected by others which has happened to me with Covid. I live a somewhat sheltered life as a result. While respecting personal choice, I do wonder if anti-vaxxers also decline all medicines as being “unsafe”? Quid Pro Quo? #vaccines

@georgetakei@universeodon.com being said by the same people who tell the poor to drink less latte and eat less avocado. There was a lady in France in the 18th century who advised the poor to eat cake. What happened to her…?

It seems any discussion on Facebook at least (even in closed groups to a point) is accompanied by a swathe of negative posts to the effect that they don't work, and are very expensive to run. When people try and post evidence to the contrary they are accused of lying or being paid shills. Conclusion - those with the agenda are the critics not the actual owners. I can only speak from my own experience that my house is warm and the ASHP is costing me less than the oil did. I can't see any reason for the number of people posting in a topic that they manifestly have no personal interest in except that it is they who are the shills. Just my thoughts. #heatpump#heatpumps

So Trump and Bibi have killed Ayatollah Khamenei. In so doing I believe they have made a huge mistake. During WW2 the British mulled assassinating Hitler. They decided against because they would have turned him into a martyr and poured fuel on the flames of Nazism. That, and he was doing a good job of losing the war and someone willing to listen to the Generals might have replaced him. So it is in Iran. They haven’t decapitated the Iranian zealots, only given them more rage. Only opportunity for another firebrand zealot to replace him bent on retribution. Why? To shore up the reputation at home of two vulnerable politicians facing prosecution when they are no longer in power. And in the case of Trump to boost his ratings in the polls. Well, when the suicide bombers exact revenge, as they will, on the streets of the West I hope it was worth it. #iran #trump

Trumps criticism of the UK over use of bases to attack Iran and references to Churchill is directed at supporting mini-Trump (aka Farage) and the UK GOP ( aka Conservatives) and feeding the right wing UK media. The Tories worship Churchill while forgetting that they were the party of appeasement in the 1930s and in 1940 opposed him becoming PM preferring Lord Halifax who was openly seeking terms (aka surrender) with Hitler. It was Labour and the Liberals who wanted Churchill. Fast forward to the present day and Starmer correctly IMO decided to not be the US lapdog and not participate in an illegal war unlike his predecessor Blair. It is emerging that the Israelis are calling the shots making the US look like the weak lapdog. About time a UK PM had some spine to not dance to whatever tune the US plays and stand up for international law. As the rest of Europe is doing. Trump fumes that his former lapdog no longer comes to heel. #trumpwar #trump #iranwar

The US has mustered the world’s most powerful naval assets in the Persian Gulf but is apparently unable to keep the Straits of Hormuz open for shipping. It is not actually physically closed as some ships can pass through belonging to non aligned countries. It is the threat of attack and insurance.

The inability of the US to negate Iranian forces threatening shipping gives the lie to the claims of destruction and decapitation of Iranian forces.

Or is the wish for NATO to come to US aid merely a pretext for eventual US withdrawal from NATO?

Countries are wisely choosing not to get involved in the mess created by US/Israel. However, Trump threatens to “remember” and he is a vindictive man.

Difficult to establish if this is the plan all along, or just Trump.

A war and the inevitable retribution could of course create a “Reichstag Fire” opportunity for Trump to restrict democracy in the US ahead of the mid-terms. I do not believe for one moment that he will voluntarily leave office without creating a republican hegemony and a Trump dynasty.

The echoes with 1930s Germany are chilling.

With the resignation of Trumps top counter terrorism official who says Iran posed no threat to the US, it is becoming more and more clear that it is Israel calling the shots.

A pre-emptive move to neutralise the only effective threat to an Israeli annexation of the West Bank? Supported by Christian Evangelical hawks in the US who believe that the return of the Jews to Israel will bring the rapture and a second coming of Christ.

If true then the world is being held to ransom by people with literal belief in the Bible or their version of it.

Someone tell me this is the 21st century and not the Middle Ages please….

@Kruku That is true and already the case. Many there because they made a big donation or knew the right people. That is why I favour scrapping Lords entirely. Not only is the whole idea anachronistic but patently it doesn’t work. Several hundred years ago the Lords was established with the express purpose of ensuring that the Commons couldn’t tread on the toes of the powerful. That is still, in part, its function. A chamber created, yes to scrutinise legislation, but also to protect vested interests. I think that as in nearly all democracies an upper chamber is desirable. I am not keen on a chamber of more elected politicians with their snouts in the trough. Certainly not by first past the post anyway. A chamber of what life peers were intended to be, the great and the good, would be OK as long as there were checks and balances to eradicate cronyism, packing with political mates, and the public being able to have a say in who gets appointed. And to eject those working the system. How this would work is above my pay grade, but the current system isn’t working.
