I am interested in the ways communication, technology and governance shape each other – currently particularly with regard to the formation of platforms and their governance, as well to the making of 21st century AI and its governance.

Our Special Issue on "Artificial Intelligence Controversies" is coming to life, and with a blast: Lucy Suchman on why AI is so remarkably uncontroversial and wildly controversial at the same time. Or: Why AI has accomplished to be taken-granted and push tech-centred discourses on its impact and integration and society.

Diyi Liu (@besincere) is kicking this off with an impressive presentation on Borderline content and platformised speech governance on #TikTok. I love the empirical contextualisation of changing moderation with governmental activities and public controversies! #AoIR2024 Full paper is here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/poi3.388

In the AI imaginaries panel, @SKannengiesser presents a study on Imagining Sustainable AI. Findings show that Al for Sustainability is Being Imagined, but not Sustainability of Al. #AoIR2024

It's really fascinating to hear Zheyu talk about content moderation in the Chinese context. And how platforms navigate the challenges of scale, state regulation, user activities etc.

The map is not the territory. Interesting discussions today on mapping and modelling at the Villa Vigoni. Great sidenote by Avi Bernstein on Swiss maps, and why light shines contra-factually from the North in Swiss Maps.

Here's a good read-up of the Swiss "illumination" controversy in the 1920s: https://blog.nationalmuseum.ch/en/2024/01/casting-light-on-relief-map-shading/
