@GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social Reminds me of some "open source" apps in China that use Tencent QQ and Baidu Netdisk for distribution. That does not necessarily make them non-free, but somehow defeats the purpose of being open source, since users have to install other proprietary apps on their device and register accounts associated with real ID to get them. No ethical FLOSS developer should ever do that. And apparently we can't expect that from Google.

@loucyx@mastodon.social Quite a few people believe that with LLMs you can pick all three. It could be true under certain circumstances, but whatever that is, it's certainly not healthy and/or ethical. (e.g., being fast but unsustainable; being good only for the business but not for the users; being cheap by exploiting others)

@phaedral@beige.party @nixCraft@mastodon.social They haven't yet. There are 6 proposals for an LLM policy in Debian, and only one of them actually bans LLM-generated contributions: https://www.debian.org/vote/2026/vote_002 I doubt that one will eventually land. Most likely they'll find a compromise and "accepts LLM content with caution" like what the Rust team did.

@_elena@mastodon.social FreeBSD is not hard to learn, especially if you're already familiar with other Unix-like systems. I spent a weekend in 2023 setting up FreeBSD on my laptop and porting all my dotfiles, and been using it as a daily driver ever since. From a developer's perspective, FreeBSD's source code, both kernel and userland, is generally simpler and more hackable than its Linux counterparts. And the maintainers are pleasant to work with - they are friendly and patient towards outside contributors.
