Steffen Wendzel
Professor at Ulm University. Also head of the university's computing center and library. Working on #internet #censorship, covert channels, #taxonomies, and (sometimes) #scientometrics, #bibliometrics -- https://www.wendzel.de | private account | Internet user since 1998, Linux since Kernel 2.0.0, OpenBSD since 2.7, NetBSD since 1.5.x. Author of several German #Linux books.
1/2 The last one I've read during this vacation is a another German title: 10:9 für Stroh. As a regular reader of campus novels, I was interested in this one that essentially covers a PhD defense and some events that happen right after the defense. There are also two more short novels in this book, but I won't explain them here.
I recently finished reading the German edition of "the lost world" by Michael #Crichton. I own the 1995-edition. It's about the 15th Crichton book I've read so far. I am not a big fan of Jurassic Park and this book is the successor of it, but I wanted to see whether I like this one. Overall, it was okayish and it teaches us that we might not master each technology. Some parts appear not too convincing (esp. the role of the two chrildren) but such books beam me away from work during my vacation.
I wish I would have attended #Datenspuren this year. I was there only once (in 2011) and gave a talk. However, I really needed a quite vacation this year.
Also, I think about sharing my lecture slides again (like I did in the past). So, expect some more slides and content here.
@petersuber@fediscience.org @johanrooryck@mstdn.social thank you for sharing. We argue for a censorship-resistant academia, too. @cdpxe@dju.social
Is GNOME's Rhythmbox project semi-alive or alive? https://github.com/GNOME/rhythmbox/commit/9b3bf2a3258cf090ed5f4531fcf40a43d110b69e
There are only few git activities recently. However, I still use Rhythmbox on a regular basis on one Ubuntu 22.04 LTS system that is attached to my TV (on a Dell XPS Developer Ed. Laptop from 2012).
I just read Heinrich Heine's "Deutschland. Ein Wintermärchen" again (after 20 years). I was surprised how often Heine speaks about #censorship. Fun fact: this book covers several regional meals of that time :)
Another case. Citing three of our works, including one by Zillien and Wendzel. https://www.mdpi.com/1099-4300/28/9/999
- Statement about our paper: wrong (we did not propose the epsilon-similarity/compressibility score, we *used* it, it was introduced way earlier by Cabuk et al.)
- Citation: wrong (they state its a journal publication dated 2023, in fact it was a NordSec 2018 paper)
I doubt the rest of the work is valuable. Of course, it's MDPI, but still... Probably AI-generated content.
Siehe dazu: @cdpxe@dju.social
Internet Censorship’s Implications on Academic Research: We wrote an article (https://cacm.acm.org/opinion/internet-censorships-implications-on-academic-research-motivating-an-academic-accessibility-by-design/ ) and believe that Internet censorship must be considered an important issue. #censorship #humanrights #research #science #infosec #freespeech #freedomofspeech #cybersecurity
A question just appeared during a talk at #ARES2026 session ARES06: Where to get DNS tunneling recordings of real-world malware? We have published exactly such recordings during last year's ARES: https://github.com/dreamingdust/domainator-dataset #steganography #tunneling #covertchannels
The Great Giana Sisters. Stage 14 at first attempt playing it after several decades. I admit a level warp from AFAIR 6 to 9 though. #retrogaming #retrocompuing #amiga500
About 30 years ago, I finished Lotus Turbo Challenge II on my Amiga 500 (not for the first time ^^), and without using level codes. Today, I barely made it to level 3... but after all these years I still remembered 3/7 level codes (these are displayed when you make it two a new level). TWILIGHT, THE SKIDS, LIVERPOOL. As far as I know the brain favors storing information that is linked to emotion 😀

Oh, right! Well, ResearchGate ... let's hope people actually *read* my works :)
Based on an analysis of twenty countries, Lenz et al. observed a sliding shift in censorship behavior based on the degree of authoritarianism.
