They don't think. They know. They have carefully weighed the likeliness of repercussions vs to the profit to be made from doing it anyway. They have also weighed how likely it is they will face legal action and what the legal action will cost them. They have also also stacked the deck against the common user and any legislators that might want to hold them accountable through lobbying and other forms of coercion or bribery. This is a well calculated "risk" vs reward for them.

I don’t think them saying this has much to do with liking Altman. Rather, I think they are raging at Gizmodo (because well, Gizmodo) and also at the headline of an article they didn’t read.

I agree with you in general, I think the problem is that people who do understand Gen AI (and who understand what it is and isn't capable of, and why), get rationally angry when it's humanized by using words like these to describe what it's doing. The reason they get angry is because this makes people who do believe in the "intelligence/sapience" of AI more secure in their belief set and harder to talk to in a meaningful way. It enables them to keep up the fantasy. Which of course helps the corps pushing it.

Some people on Tumblr really needed this last week. There was a poll asking if the ones with Autism would get rid of it if they could. A lot of people mentioned that they have both Autism and ADHD and would get rid of ADHD in a heartbeat. I am in the minority of people who have come to accept having Autism and ADHD as part of who I am, and I recognize that there’s nothing wrong with me. I’m perfectly fine the way I am. I don’t know who I would be if I got rid of either of them. I’d rather the world change to be more accepting of people who are different because every difference is important. I was born this way and as far as I’m concerned the world should accept me. It’s no different than being born a brunette or with brown eyes. A more accepting world can exist, but we have to survive in it and thrive in it for that to happen.
