mastodon 4.7.3Professor of Digital Communication and Director of the QUT Digital Media Research Centre
Hey #aoir2025, kick start your conference with our @qutdmrc@mas.to experimental session on data donation where you can develop your own unique digital persona and learn about the creative potential of this emerging method. In room 10b @ 9-10:30am (Thursday).
Very much enjoying this #aoir2025 keynote by Prof. Marie Santini. Prof Santini's concept of how platforms engage in the "theatre of transparency" resonates strongly with the critique of the role of advertising on platforms and how the platforms feed us scraps of data and deliberately obscure the juicy details which can provide a far more accurate and fuller account of how these systems actually work in practice and in everyday contexts.
And a bit of self-promotion if you'll allow it. I just had the best time presenting work from our @adms@fediverse.au Ad Observatory project here at #aoir24. I overviewed the computational infrastructures we've developed over several years to enable observability of ads in ordinary users' feeds, and some very new findings that reveal the sequences of ad categories that can help to inform the impacts of ad tech on end user populations. Those of you who know me well know that I have a particular bugbear with the narrow way in which APIs and web/app ecologies are often theorised and understood in the broader humanities. Which is why it's fabulous to be in this panel with Jennifer Prybus and Mark Cote who expand conceptualisation of SDKs as a key driver of data monadologies. Fantastic work worth checking out: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/20539517241231270 #aoir24
