Last year, a stable source of internet freedom funding was unceremoniously cut off, grants rescinded, and organizations left in the lurch—with users in peril and programs shut down.
So far this funding has not re-materialized. If we want a free internet, if we want a private internet, if we want nonprofit internet (meaning, no extractive profit model), we have to collectively support the tools and software that makes that possible.
Today, @torproject@mastodon.social has launched a funding campaign to support 10 internet freedom + privacy projects using the quadratic funding formula. The more individual donors participate, the more match funds each organization will receive!
This is an experiment, an optimistic pilot, a way to use Tor's platform to help the ecosystem. I hope you'll take a look!
The Tor Project (@torproject@mastodon.social) is recruiting new members for our Board of Directors! Come serve as vital governance and fiduciary oversight (fun, right?!) during a critical time to advance privacy and fight online censorship. Jokes aside, governance is such an important function for the health and longevity of Tor—this is a meaningful role for people who want to have positive impact. https://www.torproject.org/about/jobs/board-of-directors/
Iranians have been cut off from the internet for nearly 3 months.
Put yourself in this scenario: your country is in an active war. You cannot contact your family members in another part of the country, or abroad, to confirm you're OK. You cannot read the news or check social media for information. You can't scroll as a distraction. You can't access your email account, or your bank, or do your school or work tasks.
Today, the internet seems to be coming back in Iran, although it remains heavily filtered. WhatsApp is now completely blocked. **There's still much more to be done to help Iranians get back online:** technical support in Farsi, access to tools, and monitoring of connectivity in Iran to improve circumvention strategies.
Organizations like **the Miaan Group** and **ASL19** are doing this work, though they have been hindered by major funding cuts in the last year. Consider making a contribution to Miaan or ASL19 so they can continue supporting Iranians.
