Actually, we work harder than medieval peasants and the church specifically condemned working on Sundays.
Also the seven deadly sins predate Christianity.

virtue ethics
I’m pretty sure I read something a while ago which drew a connection between Socrates to Aristotle’s Golden Mean, something about Plato, and then that being the inspiration for the seven.

As opposed to the Lemmy solution, “Don’t vote! That’ll do something!”

Literally the other person replying next to you said it’s a useless system distracting people. You don’t have to say “don’t vote” exactly to say not to vote.
Also there’s a bunch of people on here saying not to vote so…

Right, and if voting was useless, why do politicians want to take it away from demographics they hate? Why would people have to fight so hard for it?
If it really didn’t matter and it really was as you say it is, then they wouldn’t need to distract people.
If you really held onto this stance, then you can’t be mad at people who voted for Trump because it’s all smoke and mirrors anyway and he was picked with what, some shadow government?
Is organizing a revolution so easily distracted that spending like, a little part of a day casting a ballot something that’ll completely undermine everything? Is it that fragile?

Yeah sure, both sides ism, heard this all before. No room for nuance, may as well let the people who want to shoot trans folks waltz into office unopposed.

Ah yes, please come in. We have a lot to unpack here after our last session.
So, you think all jokes are somehow painful. So you think this is because you have a bad relationship with jokes? You’re not funny, so you resent people who are? It goes so far that you resent jokes themselves?
How’s your relationship with your mother?

When voting is treated like the absolutely most important means of political struggle, people do tune out and neglect to organize.
Prove it. Where’s the peer reviewed study? If you can’t back that up with some science this entire argument is based off of an assumption. What if voting gets people more politically active? If this is the whole reason why you think people shouldn’t vote and take direct action, it’s a flimsy one.
And, even if it was true, there’s nothing that is stopping you from reminding people to be active and not just vote. You could go into comment sections and say people should go participate in building a revolution after they vote.
But I digress, you made a claim that’s the basis of your whole argument, do you have any proof that voting leads to less organizing?
No Lenin quotes please I want an actual study ty

Why only fight on one front when you could fight on all fronts? You can vote and do other things, you know.

Further, when people treat voting as their primary means of political engagement, they do check out!
You said it right there.

First of all, that’s not an apology. “Sorry I lied about your position you’re just saying it so badly I lept to a conclusion so it’s really your fault” isn’t an apology, it’s a backhanded accusation.
And you’re not going to quote my response?
We’ve had this argument before and you haven’t convinced me this is true, especially with more immediate political concerns.
I’ve also talked with people who literally are against voting so your statement does not speak for everyone.
I dared to say that we’ve talked before and that you didn’t convince me, so you assume my position is “don’t organize only vote?”
What kind of binary thinking is that? “Oh hey this guy said voting isn’t entirely useless so he must hate the idea of doing anything else”
And you said I’m the one who is making straw men?!
We’ve talked before, and even in this conversation, I said that people need to organize, start a revolution, help out locally, yada yada, you know, the same thing you want and advocate for… As well as take some time out of their afternoon to do the minimal effort for damage control via voting.
If you think the revolution is so weak that doing that will end it, then you don’t believe in the revolution as much as I do.
So why don’t I think your comment is true?
Because voting, right now, is the primary political outlet people have. It’s the one people have access to and just about everyone can do. Secondarily you have people running for office, but that gets less accessible the higher up the chain you go for average people. The way the system is, as it is now, voting is the primary political outlet.
Will voting get us socialism? Probably not, there’s a lot of old guard in there. Hypothetically if everyone voted in every socialist they could rewrite the rules but that’s unlikely to happen.
But we already talked about getting people in office who will do less harm in the interim, people who would not stand in the way of a socialist revolution, or sympathetic to it. As I recall that was either not good enough or you thought that would make people just drop out of the revolution.
But whatever, you don’t want to listen and are going to make up what my position is? Have fun arguing with yourself, don’t get too much straw in your knuckles. I’m sure you’ll get loads of people to join up with you that way.

You are disparaging organizing in favor of voting on the grounds of voting being better
I have never, once, at all, ever held that position, nor have I said such a thing. I have always been a proponent of organizing and voting.
Don’t you dare put those words in my mouth.

Ok Cool, will that goal be achieved by, say, early November?
We both know it won’t.
So the more immediate thing that we can do something about, while we keep doing the organizing you’re talking about, is to try to flip Congress. It’s not going to solve everything, but it will put a bump in the road for the literal Nazis that took over America.
It’s not perfect.
Democrats suck.
The easiest way to put a bump in the road is to vote against Republicans, though, and not voting makes it a lot easier for Republicans to win.
And I’ll repeat this for you, as I’ve told you many times, and apparently you didn’t get it: this is not an either/or situation, I am saying to both vote and organize.
I’m literally on your side and on board.

Even reading through the abstract, this study is irrelevant to what we’re talking about here. They did a study that showed how people who are against the system and protest the system will inevitably butt heads with people who want to keep the system, the status quo.
Nowhere is it talking about voting, and that voting causes people to stop organizing.
The fact you said you “found” it instead of having that information on hand, and that you had to stretch to say this proves your theory means what I thought from the start.
The whole “people who vote will organize less” theory you state as absolute, the whole basis of your criticism, is made up. You assumed that this was true instead of checking. Shameful.

*you complain
and why tf would I want a Democrat dictatorship? I’m literally encouraging people to vote, which is about what they want.
If there was a Democratic dictatorship you wouldn’t vote against it.

Uh, because Republicans treat trans people worse?
I never said blue no matter who. I would gladly vote for a third party of there was a viable one that could win.

Except you’re ignoring when I’ve said that we should change voting laws so third parties are viable. If I only wanted Democrats in office I wouldn’t be supporting voter reform.

I’m not misinterpreting a thing, I’ve made my stance to this person very clear in the past and they’ve completely ignored it, and are now just straight up ignoring it and saying something completely different. Disagreeing with someone isn’t acting like an ass.

Gotten people who can do better into positions of power? Kept people who can do harm out? Gotten rid of the feudal system where you only have power of you’re genetically born into it?
If voting didn’t matter, why would people fight and die for it? If voting didn’t matter, why do conservatives want you to not vote? If voting didn’t matter, why bother pretending and gave elections?
Why should you give up your agency over your government?
Or are you cool with the people who didn’t vote and kinda let Trump take over?

I’m not really annoyed, honestly. I’m confused as to why you’d die on this hill, especially when you’re pretty obviously wrong. You clearly heard once that ask humor is derived from pain and somehow thought it was gospel, even though it is clearly not true. You’re doing all these mental gymnastics and excuses just to hold onto an idea you didn’t even come up with.

Yeah, you’re making a lot of assumptions and accusations about what I believe and that’s just full on strawmaning.
You go back and forth on how voting is useless than talk about how voting got Trump into power, and honestly, you haven’t made a single good argument for not voting. All that does as far as I’m concerned is get conservatives into office, and I’m not going to do that.
Have fun on the high road, the rest of us have to deal with consequences of people like you who don’t care if people like Trump get elected, because you took the “mOrAl HiGh GrOuNd” and wouldn’t do the minimal effort to keep a Nazi out of office.
Don’t break your arm patting yourself on the back door being a doormat.
