We actually have this in English too. For example, the masculine form is “the white coat” where the feminine is “the eggshell coat”.

I feel like the real tipping point for math was around the same time as physics, and for a similar reason. Quantum mechanics and Gödel’s incompleteness theorems touch at a similar sort of principle: there is a sort of conceptual bedrock beyond which logic fundamentally cannot extend.

Who knows? Maybe all matter is conscious and brains just have more complex consciousness. The hard problem of consciousness is unsolved and panpsychism is one hypothesis.

The answer is that one of the choices, while still shitty and possibly even more painful, creates the possibility for a better future despite the present. I have the right to decide to suffer the sting of disinfectant, it’s my body. I don’t have the right to condemn others for the sake of political expedience. Not voting for them is what forces the party to offer legitimate opposition to fascism and representation of the lower class. No it doesn’t. When has it ever done that? Typically it just pushes them right to try to get more centrists. Vote for the leftists in the primary. That’s what forces them. You don’t appeal to them, you annex them. Not voting is literally doing nothing. It is not the crystal clear communication signal you think it is, it’s literally nothing.

The system gets legitimacy from the 150 million people who vote. A tiny minority of leftists refusing to participate does not delegitimize the system one iota. As a cis hetero white man, honestly my vote either way doesn’t affect me all that much, other than maybe being thrown in jail for leftist organizing. But it also doesn’t really affect the status quo either. I vote to benefit the people who would suffer under one choice more than the other: people of color, women, the LGBTQ community, immigrants, etc. And yes, obviously we need to build an alternative where no one suffers, but that takes time. Personally, I prefer to at least attempt to minimize the suffering of others during that time. Accelerationism is sociopathy.

I can’t believe your making quantitative allowances for genocide. Wow. Well not making them just made the quantities bigger. The problem with equating evils because they only differ by “degree”, is that it only peels off the voters who care about qualitative genocide, which tend to be those who vote against the greater quantitative genocide. The inevitable result is the total lack of qualitative reduction, and the quantitative increase of genocide. The actual people who make up that quantitative increase do not deserve that which you’ve permitted them. I had really hoped they wouldn’t get it.

Ah yes, I have you tagged. You only care about the suffering when you can use it as a political cudgel. I remember you told me immigrant children suffering in America was justified because they have the privilege of living in the imperial core, and then justified it saying they would suffer either way. Your opinion could not possibly hold less value, especially on the topic of the suffering of others. Your performative outrage is disgusting, at least I actually send aid to Palestine.

Why do you think that the market should yield to spontaneous mutual aid? When I say “should”, I mean in the sense of an imperative. As in “You should brush your teeth before going to bed” not “The bus should be here in 5 minutes”. It is the intention to drive the market towards spontaneous mutual aid through post-scarcity. As to the how, I specify market socialism as an initial intermediary step. Collective ownership, even limited to the firm level, inherently counteracts wealth concentration by distributing profits between the worker-owners. Maximizing worker-ownership is the primary focus. Eventually, abolish the stock market entirely and replace existing stocks with bonds. From there, as automation prevails (with profits settling more equally) the work week will get shorter and shorter and production cheaper and cheaper until it basically isn’t worth the trouble of keeping track anymore. I get the skepticism, but socialist markets have fundamental differences from capitalist ones; the primary difference being wealth concentration. Anarcho-communism isn’t against stepwise processes, but our critique of state socialists is that the State is structurally incapable of bringing about communism within any time bound. Which is why I’m presently a market socialist, not a state socialist. The state is just another centralized hierarchy. Businesses are distributed. Parallel to the economy, the next social step is community development, and flattening of hierarchies through densely iterative representation. Don’t get me started. What we mean is that the solutions we pursue should reflect the values and priorities of the world we actually want to see. Which I respect, but when pursued beyond the context of the material conditions of the world in which we currently live, those values and priorities can be taken to the point of impotent ideological virtue signaling. We’re wrestling pigs here, and if we’re preoccupied with keeping our shirt clean then we’re not gonna make much progress. Since we want to see a world without hierarchy and authority Never gonna happen, and I think you might be stretching anarchist theory. There are too many people on this planet to coexist without organizational hierarchy and authority. You need hierarchy to accomplish any complex task, you need authority to keep some asshole from dumping waste in the river. The point of anarchy, as I understand it, is to make those hierarchies as flat as possible, and those authorities democratically controlled and revokable. it makes no sense from an anarchist perspective to support a “socialist” state as part of the transition to anarchy. I.e., we should not build systems that we will have to revolt against in the future There is no future where you don’t have to fight some system. Whatever happens between now and the future, there will be a system of some sort. A distributed democratic state with worker-owned industry is probably the easiest system for an anarchist to fight. Don’t get me wrong, each step is going to have challenges, but my goal is to find the path where each transition is as easy as possible. There are still a few steps between market socialism and anarcho-communism. But from my calculations, the next step which is the easiest to transition to and easiest to transition out of is market socialism. I yell on Lemmy all the time about how the current bourgeoisie are some of the worst creatures ever born, and I am constantly watching news and reading about the vile things the bourgeoisie are capable of Yeah, it really really sucks to be ahead of the curve on consciousness. But the thing about societal organization is that it requires you to organize society, which takes generations. Society steers like a cruise ship, not a speedboat. If you’re going to become politically invested, you’re going to have to come to terms with social inertia and develop the patience to slowly usher in an age you’ll probably never see come to fruition.

turning the election into a farce through a lack of cooperating they way they want you to is the easiest & laziest way for an american to help induce such a change, but it will not work if too many people are unable/unwilling to see past the parliamentary mind games that makes you think that you’re helping the people they’re holding ransom for your vote. Too many people are unable to see past the parliamentary mind games. If you can’t persuade a hundred million people, that strategy is pointless and ineffective. You can’t persuade a hundred million people, so this strategy is pointless and ineffective.

If the people suffering systematically is a constant between the two options, then how is it relevant to the choice? Rational people make choices based on the differences in outcomes between the options. Haven’t we seen a significant uptick in the systematic suffering of historically suffering people under this administration? Between “the status quo” and “worse than the status quo”, isn’t the status quo the best short term solution if you actually care about the people who are suffering? Is their suffering reduced in any way because you make a principled stand against the status quo? It seems like you’re just feeding marginalized people to fascists in exchange for getting to say you didn’t vote for the neo-lib. I don’t see how that helps the marginalized people, seems like something a privileged person would do because they can afford to not care about the result of elections.

The numbers are slightly higher because Biden had the beginning. Pareto principle, they got all the easy genocide done up front. It’s not like the numbers are lower now because support has reduced, because support has only increased. Show me a reduction in direct US support. The US isn’t directly killing Palestinians, that’s Israel. The US is providing the money and weapons Israel uses, so track the money and weapons, not the deaths. Is the US providing more, or less, money and weapons to Israel now, or under Biden?

But, y’know, if the imperialism and genocide is invariant between the options, I’m still gonna vote for the one doing fewer other terrible things 🤷🏼 Obviously I’m also going to do everything I can to get to a point where I don’t have an imperialist, genocidal government. Mutual aid, canvassing for leftists in the primaries, political organization, developing community, taking over small municipalities, labor organization, etc. All of which is gonna be a lot harder now that this side has declared antifascists to be a terrorist organization, and arrests people for pamphlets.

You’re never going to get your revolution if 99.999% of the population is too for you “spineless” to caucus with. If you can’t find common ground with other leftists who are already sold on communism because they disagree with your strategy, how in the absolute fuck are you expecting to persuade the liberal working class?

Right, but the people running Iran right now are the result of the US interfering explicitly to combat Iran’s socialization of their oil. Which reflexively led to the Iranian Revolution and the current Islamic Republic. The current regime would not exist without US interference. Al Gore and Bernie Sanders suffered domestic interference, not foreign.

A genocidal fascist was going to win either way. This one seemed more genocidal from the outset, and the last two years corroborates that. It’s not about the people who would have suffered either way, I can’t presently do anything about that but I’m trying. It’s about all the extra people who are suffering now: immigrants in death camps, victims of slashed social programs, the dead Iranians on the other side of that expensive gas. I can’t save Palestine right now. I lack the leverage. But I could’ve helped save many of the others, and you could’ve too. It works better together. Don’t get distracted by the horrors you can’t fix, focus on the ones where you can at least slow the bleeding

if I let the democrats know that not even genocide will cost them the election I keep seeing variations on this, and no one has been able to explain to me how that communication vector works. When has that ever worked? They just double down or shift right to try impotently to scoop “moderate Republicans”. If they really are a uniparty, do you think they really care that much about winning or losing anyway? They’re gonna keep supporting genocide no matter how many times they lose. The point isn’t to try to persuade the DNC (by doing literally nothing), the point is to slow the bleeding while we build what comes next. glad to see at least one blue dog understands there’s other tools. Those are the main tools. Voting is the “other” tool. But it’s an easy tool, and it scales well with community organization. Seriously, take over a small municipality. As opposed to the other side who also arrested peaceful protesters on bogus charges. Who also beat up protesters. Who also broke up strikes. Who also hounded leftist organisers Exactly. "Also"s don’t matter when you make the choice. The things that are the same are gonna be the same either way. What matters are the differences, and there are obvious differences. Like labelling “aintifa” a terrorist organization. People are much more agitated under Trump. Organizing is easier in many ways. Of course, on the backs of already marginalized people. I don’t have the stomach to knowingly increase the suffering of others for political gain.

You’re lucky, my area stopped recycling glass years ago. Like I said, there’s a huge backlog which makes processing less attractive. Also most recycling seems to be single stream (all recyclables go in one bin and get sorted at the facility), and broken glass contaminates the other recyclables which is dangerous to human sorters and is abrasive to machines. I’ve seen a couple pilot programs pulverizing glass for concrete, but as with lots of recycling (looking at you plastic) in most places it’s not as simple as “Just recycle it”. Again, more a logistics issue than a material one.

I started browsing the Wikipedia for Apartment, and came across this One dwelling with two storeys The vast majority of apartments are on one level, hence “flat”. Some, however, have two storeys joined internally by stairs, just like many houses. One term for this is “maisonette”, as above. Some housing in the United Kingdom, both public and private, was designed as scissor section flats. On a grander level, penthouses may have more than one storey to emphasise the idea of space and luxury. Two-storey units in new construction are sometimes referred to as “townhouses” in some countries (though not usually in Britain). and Maisonette … has no strict definition, but the OED suggests “a part of a residential building which is occupied separately, usually on more than one floor and having its own outside entrance.” It differs from a flat in having usually more than one floor So it seems that flat implies one floor, and most exceptions have an alternative name like “penthouse”

I think moral decisions should make some allowances for gaps in our knowledge. It wasn’t that long ago that we didn’t use anaesthesia on babies because we assumed they couldn’t feel pain. Consciousness remains a pretty conspicuous gap in our knowledge, I’m not sure moral decisions can safely disregard known unknowns.
