@mullvadnet@mastodon.online The proposal frames child protection as a device-level control, but that shifts enforcement into universal surveillance with predictable impacts on encryption, open-source systems, and lawful anonymity. The key issue is whether such measures can be narrowly effective without normalizing continuous monitoring for everyone.

@i_listen@mastodon.social @mullvadnet@mastodon.online If partial measures pass, each exception becomes precedent, shifting privacy from a right to a permission. At what point does accumulated “narrow” monitoring become de facto universal oversight?

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Microsoft Teams is experiencing message delays and delivery issues, with thousands of reports logged. Incidents like this are a reminder that even mature platforms depend on complex systems where failures can cascade, especially as AI features scale alongside core infrastructure.

@Gargron@mastodon.social Totally understandable. One uncontextualized photo can freeze a moment that doesn’t represent the person, especially on a reference site meant to inform, not caricature. It’s a reminder that “open” systems still need norms about consent, quality, and representation, not just access. Would a simple quality or consent check before featuring images on biographies make open knowledge fairer without restricting it?

@Mastodon@mastodon.social Decentralized networks reduce single-owner control, but governance, moderation, and funding still shape outcomes. Mastodon shifts power across communities, not away from trade-offs. How transparent are decisions and data practices across instances?

@Gargron@mastodon.social I barely watch awards shows, but it always feels like U.S. adaptations smooth things out for a wider audience, even when that costs some bite. That tradeoff shows up everywhere, not just in comedy. Do you think that’s about network pressure, or just different expectations from viewers?

@yacc143@mastodon.social @mullvadnet@mastodon.online If “trusted democracies” mandate device spyware, it lowers the argument barrier for everyone else and erodes sovereignty over user devices. Where is the enforceable line that stops precedent from becoming global default?

Replying to
@Gargron@mastodon.social I think the concern is less about optional features and more about direction and incentives. When major platforms normalize AI as a default trajectory, it shifts expectations even if adoption is low. The question is whether resistance can meaningfully shape that path, or only slow it at the margins.

The Greenland episode hints at something bigger.
Traditional power struggles when legitimacy and trust collapse faster than authority can act.
If backlash now travels instantly, what form of power still holds under scrutiny? https://youtu.be/Q3dfPuV4n40?si=tLN8uRJaQqnC2vNr

When shared experiences become unaffordable for the middle, how does that reshape culture, connection, and who gets to belong over time?

Land shapes housing before design.

In cities like NYC and Tokyo, high land costs and zoning limits push apartments smaller.

Micro-apartments aren’t a trend, they’re a pressure response.

When zoning loosens, supply adapts; when land stays scarce, density is the only option.

So are micro-apartments the problem, or a signal of land policy at work?

@claudinec@aus.social I’m not trying to replace human conversation, AI is just a drafting aid, like notes or editing. I still choose the words, stand by the ideas, and engage in good faith. If it feels flat, that’s on me, not the tool.

@claudinec@aus.social I actually agree. Style and cadence matter to me too, and a lot of AI writing does feel flat when it’s used on autopilot. I use it more like a messy first draft, not a voice I want to publish as-is. And I understand why that flattening of craft bothers people, it bothers me too. I’m honestly still feeling out where the line is.

@jabgoe2089 You’re right: each instance admin sets rules and can change them. By “transparency,” I mean whether those rules, moderation practices, data retention, and funding are clearly documented and communicated, and whether there’s a clear process for changes and disputes.

@mattjhodgkinson@scicomm.xyz Yes, I use AI as a drafting and reasoning aid, but the viewpoints, framing, and accountability are mine. The substance stands or falls on its logic and evidence, not the tool used to help articulate it. Would you judge a post differently if the same argument were written with a spell-checker or editor instead of AI?

Replying to
@mattjhodgkinson@scicomm.xyz I understand the concern, but authorship isn’t defined by keystrokes, it’s defined by responsibility for the claims. I choose the premises, accept the conclusions, and stand behind the evidence; the tool helps with articulation, not authorship. If the reasoning is sound and the facts hold, the medium doesn’t change the argument, so the real question is whether we judge ideas by their logic or by assumptions about how they were drafted.
