My friend’s bridal shower. It started when we all went to the thrift store to buy white dresses. Those dresses would get absolutely destroyed throughout the night. We painted the bride-to-be’s dress with colourful inks and went bar-hopping. She wore an articulated panda mask. The maid of honor showed off her bouldering skills by climbing a billboard sign. We danced around an obelisk.

I’m not saying this will work for you, but it always worked for me. The first time I brought anyone to my place I’d ask if they wanted to see my collection of strange porn. No one ever said no, and if it didn’t work out I stayed friends with all of them. My favorite piece features the line “These aren’t regular penises, these are roots of lust!” said in a demonic voice.

I grew apart with a friend who started spouting incel rhetoric. His last straw was hitting on the waitress during my birthday dinner despite people telling him how uncomfortable it made everyone involved. We barely talked for about two years. When we got back together he had become a environmental activist, started dating a non-binary person and was taking DBT therapy to help with his emotional issues. I’d started therapy as well, which helped me get over some of my own shit and forgive him for falling down the dumbass rabbit hole. We’ve been friends for fifteen years now and he’s on of my favorite people.

Society’s perception of women has always been skewed. I took a psychology class that, when going over the fundamentals in the early days, some of the first studies were done on the emotional regulation of women compared to men. These studies have been done over and over again, always showing the same thing: That women are no more emotional than men, and no less effective at regulating emotions. Over a hundred years later and we still have to keep proving it. If the truth that we are just as rational and intellegent as men were to be widely accepted, it would become a lot harder to blame us for our apparent lack of stoicism and grace. Unfortunately this imbalance is so ingrained in people’s perceptions of women that even cold, hard facts haven’t changed their minds.
