why does it require admin rights to run, then? right at startup, and if you try to run it with a tool that fakes admin rights, it will crash (unlike other installers it can successfully make run)

It’s not that Wine runs things as an administrator

yes, it is that

Wine emulates the Windows virtual filesystem by creating and using a directory in your home (by default), which means you own the entire thing;

I was always installing fitgirl games to my other drive, where I owned the entire thing. I know because I remember I set the ownership.

However, the existing Program Files folder in your OS drive (C: by default, idk if you can change its volume letter) is owned by… I have no idea, actually, but it’s a system account, not yours.

The last paragraph may be inaccurate, I was much less

I have never installed fitgirl games there.

If yes, then we must look further…is the position (not the switch itself) of a binary switch (like a light switch) a physical thing that you can own? Would you consider it destroyed if it was switched away from it’s original position? the light switch is not something intended to store data, but the memory in your phone is. wiping the data destroys all the photos, media, logins, configuration on your phone, making them permanently and irreversibly inaccessible. and all of that is my property.

by denying childcare benefits, and giving a visit from child welfare. the school should start the procedure when they see the kid scrolling social media regularly, or if the kid regularly says they want their phone (when somehow taken away) as that means they are already kinda addicted to it. child welfare investigates whether the suspicions are true, initiates denying benefits, and communicates directly with the parents being willing to support them improving the situation, including offering free assistance from child’s psychologist. then, the point becomes not denying benefits, but recognizing that they have little time to figure it out themselves, and giving all the help they need.

As a photographer I’m a firm believer in the right to take photos and videos in public, for both artistic and documentary purposes. sure, no problem with that, just be careful. There is no expectation of privacy when in a public place that’s blatantly false. However much you deny it, there is an expectation of privacy in public. we are not going out to have a chance to be acting on your photos and videos. we are going out because we need to, to go to work, the shop or to the doctors. it would be right to say, there is no expectation of being invisible, or that nobody will see me do my things on the street. and of course if we do something silly, people will see that and judge us. but that is not what you said. there is an expectation of not having a permanent record of our own lives if we don’t want, and anything standing in the way of that needs to go. that being said, yes, you can take photos and videos in public. granted that there are no unconsenting people in the scene, or that they will not be recognizable in the resulting images. otherwise dont be surprised if you are being judged. recognizability does not only mean, whether do I know that person, or whether the face is visible. photographers are notorious for uploading their images to tech companies that have the capabilities and the practice to do their magic on photos to recognize people by their other attributes.

anything can store data in some abstract sense, I don’t think that is a valid argument here All you need to do, is allow an electrical signal to control the position of the switch, and you essentially have 1bit of data storage right there. besides, most light switches cannot do that

The service and timer will both be there as long as the timer doesn’t end. Which it won’t in my example. I mean saved to a file so that it will still be there after reboot

I’m experimenting with AI-based live transcription (eww, AI, slop, I get it) but it only works real time with English at the moment. the real problem there is not AI slop, but if you are basically uploading their voice to a company. if you are doing it locally, I would say fine. LLMs are better (not flawless) with translation than facts.

what security dialogs? and what race conditions? do you know what that means, or are you just throwing around words? if you mean the “verify your new device” dialog, yeah, it has a problem. it won’t appear most of the time on clients that were not open when you sent the verification request from the new device. I don’t know why, and this is not comfortable, but then I can start verification from a device I already have, and it will work. or I can also just fill in the password from my password manager, which you surely have too. but I haven’t seen other problems with it recently. XMPP at least functions reliably, if you ignore all of the protocol extensions and use it like IRC with images of course. which does not even have a bolted on security that way. Though the main and only good Android client got archived. calling element classic good is a bit of a stretch. it was very slow.

I generally like some things that syatemd gives, but is there an easier way to create timed automations with systemd timers? with cron, its just a single line with the recurrence pattern and the command. with systemd, you have to create a timer unit file with several lines, a service unit file with several lines, put them in the right directory, reload systemd, enable the timer. timers are not difficult, but much more convoluted than the crontab. if you have to make multiple pairs, or update something in them, it gets old fast.

While I could probably avoid the annoyance with some sort of script or automation that just runs each of my installed games every so often on it so the DRM shit is refreshed, I am seeing that Steam is already in the bad place for digital rights. that’s likely not steam’s fault. were these issues with triple a games, and big studios? I intend to at least start a habit of checking gog for games before getting them from Steam and might start looking in to how to keep permanent access to my top games that I’ve bought and paid for, regardless of what Valve decides. the games that didn’t work offline likely aren’t available on gog

Yeah but XMPP sounds so techy you know.… /s the trick is to not mention XMPP to the end users. if they dig deep in the app settings they can find it out, but otherwise all that end users need to know is just, download the app named conversations, and use this domain and username. the domain could likely be hidden from them by deep linking, and sending the link in a company email. then they just need to log in as anywhere else.

When I open nheko, a dialog box says “Activate encryption”; “to make this device trusted {blah blah blah}” with a big “Verify” button. Pressing it does the same as closing the dialog, so a whole lot of nothing. Same right now. I did try logging out and back in on different devices, back then only though. I don’t use nheko, I think it should have shown a menu saying something like “waiting to accept verification request”. thats what other clients do. did you have any other client opened on another device when you pressed verify?

SSL/TLS have very specific benefits. None of which matter that much for reading random articles on the web. it is a huge benefit if a man in the middle cannot run scripts on your computer. So I don’t see the problem with this website doing their own thing to bring attention to the potential issues of the current system. there is no problem with that. this could work, with the required patch to firefox, also in the repo.

there is no pihole device, it is just a software you run on linux. you can run it on any kind of computer, desktop, laptop, raspberry or a cheaper SBC, even on old smartphones (but, due to it needing to bind to a port lower than 1000 the phone needs to be rooted first), even on your home rputer if it can run openwrt. but you likely want to have it on something that does not consume much power, because this will be running 24/7

I don’t agree, I think there is a difference in likely outcomes. but even without scripts, you don’t want you article’s content (text, images, statements or names) be falsified by an attacker. Unless you are just reading the article to waste time, and magically what you read will not influence your views.

Like, right now for me, nheko and Element say everything is unverified but fluffychat says everything including itself is verified. its not desynced, it is just not presented well. I think when it shows whether another device was verified, it actually does not show if you have completed verification of that device on your account, but instead whether that device is trusted by the current one (for purposes of sharing keys and whatever). in short, it’s not “the user account trusts the device”, but “this device trusts that device”. when you verify device A with device B, they will mutually trust each other. if device B already trusted devices C and D, device A will immediately start trusting them too. if you then log in on device E and you don’t verify it with any of the others, it will basically form a distinct “trust group”. in your case it seems there are also cases when device A says it trusts B, but B says it does not trust A. how long ago did you verify your nheko, element and fluffychat devices? it looks like their verification could not complete, maybe one of them had a bug at the time or crashed before properly saving its database. both issues won’t solve themselves automatically, you will have to verify the unverified device again. or if it does not work, report the problem with logs with the function in the app, on both sides. Not Element Classic, I meant aTox (Tox for Android). It still functicryptosystem I see. tox seems to be faring worse in security. in matrix, encryption is optional in the protocol, but it’s built on well studied cryptosystem. so far when it fails, it’s people not being able to read messages they should, not unexpected people being able to read messages. and that’s because of flaws in key distribution. in tox, it seems encryption is mandatory, but they roll their own cryptosystem. and their cryptosystem has flaws that nonexperts commonly run into Jason Donenfeld, wireguard creator to expert: I think when your homebrewed crypto protocol falls to basic crypto 101 vulnerabilities that modern AKEs are explicitly designed to prevent, it’s time to pin up the red banners telling people not to use your stuff. github.com/TokTok/c-toxcore/issues/426 downvote was not me.

in that case, meshtastic does not do routing. like a network switch or a wifi AP is not a router (except combined consumer devices but that’s an other thing) though, doesn’t meshtastic have some kind of relayed operation? that would count as routing, I think.
