Amy Acton says Ohio police should work with ICE, backs qualified immunity
Democratic gubernatorial nominee Amy Acton said Tuesday that local law enforcement agencies should work with federal authorities to enforce immigration laws, a position that puts her at odds with several local leaders in her party.
Acton also supports preserving qualified immunity for police officers and increasing local government contributions to police pension systems, according to officials with the Ohio Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, a police union that endorsed her campaign Tuesday.

Nearly 1,000 trans people and allies expected to descend on Westminster to call for "cruel and unworkable" EHRC guidance to be scrapped
The mass lobby, organised by Trans+ Solidarity Alliance, will take place in Parliament on Wednesday, 9 September, with participants meeting MPs to press for stronger legal protections for trans people and changes to the controversial guidance.
Organisers say the event comes amid growing opposition to the EHRC’s interim guidance, which was produced following the Supreme Court’s ruling on the definition of sex in the Equality Act. More than 160 MPs, including a significant number of Labour backbenchers, have previously expressed concerns about the guidance and its potential impact on trans people.

Most Democrats Don’t Want to Talk About Transgender Athletes. He’s Leaning In.
Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts might be the only high-profile Democrat in America eagerly campaigning as a supporter of transgender rights.
Even as many other top Democrats have grown cagey on the issue, Mr. Markey is offering a passionate defense of transgender athletes as he runs in a primary contest on Tuesday against Representative Seth Moulton, a more moderate challenger.
Mr. Markey has argued in particular that Mr. Moulton “threw trans kids under the bus” when, shortly after the 2024 election, the congressman attributed Democrats’ defeat in part to their position on transgender issues. Mr. Moulton long defended his remarks but expressed some contrition for them this month.

Pentagon searching medical records to identify transgender troops
The military is searching protected medical records to find transgender troops who have tried to continue serving amid the Trump administration’s ban on trans Americans in uniform, multiple sources tell Federal News Network.
Commanders around the world have started receiving notices that members of their units are violating Pentagon policy, and are being instructed to begin the separation process. The sweep is believed to have outed several hundred active-duty and reserve troops, including service academy and Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets, over the past two months, according to the trans advocacy nonprofit SPARTA Pride and Priya Rashid, an attorney with the National Institute of Military Justice.

Do Kansas’ anti-trans laws count as fascism? An expert on authoritarianism says yes
A Kansas law that took effect earlier this year suddenly *invalidated the driver’s licenses and birth certificates of transgender people who had changed their gender markers. It also banned people from using public bathrooms that don’t match their sex assigned at birth — and lets people sue others* they believe are violating the law.

Musk Targets Transgender Issues in Key Midterm Senate Races
Elon Musk began a political advertising blitz on Tuesday in three states that could decide control of the Senate, as his political group began attacking Democrats over transgender issues by accusing them of allowing men to compete in women’s sports.
The spots from Mr. Musk’s group, America PAC, target three top Democratic nominees for Senate: James Talarico in Texas, Sherrod Brown in Ohio and Josh Turek in Iowa.

Political ads with made-up trans people are being used to bash Democrats
In less than a week, the group, initially created to support President Donald Trump’s 2024 reelection campaign, has released at least 38 social media ads claiming Democrats in competitive midterm Senate races would “put our daughters in danger” and prioritize a “radical trans agenda” if elected. Most of the group’s ads focus exclusively on trans people, according to a review of America PAC’s ads in the Meta and Googlelibraries.
Two of the ads feature people who are implied to be trans women; it is unclear if they are real actors or AI-generated amalgamations. The ads were briefly removed for an unspecified “policy violation” after The 19th reached out to Google about whether they violated the company’s mandatory disclosure policy for AI-generated imagery in political ads. Two additional ads were also taken down. Google did not respond to another inquiry about which policy these ads violated; as of publication the ads had been reinstated.

‘Democrats win by fighting for affordability, not by falling into Republican trans traps’
“Democrats should be focusing on Trump’s tanked economy and our diminished standing on the world stage,” said Jeremy Comeau, president of the National Federation of Stonewall Democrats. “People are being hammered by the cost of living, and we have a president who’d rather rename a gulf like some deranged cartographer than deal with the realities of the world. Democrats should be running on that every single day.
“Instead, some candidates think the way to look moderate is to take a swing at trans people first. That’s not moderate; that’s just careless, and it’s not what’s going to win this election.”

Elon Musk is reusing Trump’s anti-trans strategy. It’s unlikely to work.
The world’s richest man is spending at least $100 million on the midterm elections to support the Republican Party and his far-right agenda. But it looks like Elon Musk’s focus won’t be the economy, or the war in Iran or artificial intelligence. It won’t be his repellent ideas about race and his advocacy for “white solidarity.” Instead, Musk has come out of the gate with a barrage of ads targeting Democrats for not being sufficiently supportive of discrimination against transgender Americans.

Newsom vetoes bill aimed at protecting providers of transgender care
Assembly Bill 2164 authored by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda) would have prohibited California’s governor from recognizing a request for extradition of a person related to their providing a legally protected healthcare activity in the Golden State to transgender individuals, or if they provide reproductive services. It provided certain exemptions, such as an extradition required by federal law.

Dem mocks opponent for focus on trans folks amid rising costs: “That’s what they’re talking about?”
Former Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), who is also the current Democratic Senate candidate for Ohio, found himself in hot water in a past campaign over his response to anti-trans attacks from Republicans, and now he appears to be taking a different approach.
Instead of trying to defend or explain his views on trans rights, Brown released an ad last week slamming Republicans for focusing on trans people at all, when there are so many bigger challenges facing the state.

Republican Alabama Lawmaker Takes to the Senate Floor for Bizarre Attack on Trans People
Republican U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama and the current GOP nominee for governor of the state targeted trans people in a speech on the Senate floor, spewing transphobia and misinformation. In a tangent, the Republican also seemed to support a conspiracy theory that many flight attendants are furries.
The lawmaker accused trans people of violence and even proposed that they should be put in mental health facilities as he stood beside a poster with a pregnant man emoji with “transgederism is a mental disease” on the top.

Transphobia Isn’t Winning Votes. But It Is Making Our Lives Much Worse.
One memo from one group may not seem that important. But APP has spent years convincing Republican campaigns and donors about the potency of anti-transgender attacks against Democrats. This is despite the fact that transphobia-themed attacks have failed to seal the deal in competitive statewide and House races in 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2025. Their apparent success in 2024 was more likely a fluke, deployed against a weakened candidate on a shortened timeframe with a deflated base trying to carry the baggage of another president whose popularity was sunk by the rising cost of living.

Dems with anti-trans views are on the ballot. What should pro-trans voters do with them?
Trans journalist Erin Reed has published a list of Democratic midterm candidates with anti-trans records, and the question she is forcing is one the party would rather not answer: if trans voters keep rewarding Democrats who harm them, what signal does that send? The calculation is real, the stakes are high, and there is no clean answer.
