I've had something like this theory before without that knowledge, but I think this why the older video game composers are so good, especially those who started in the 8-bit era: hardware limitations forced them to get good at counterpoint

The music in Balan Wonderworld mostly fucking sucks, it sounds like it was written by someone who's good at their job but did not give one shit about the game, or maybe had like one single week to write the whole thing. There's like one or two tracks that aren't pure cliché bollocks.
